Obviously good sound quality is a must, but looks are also important to me. My stereo has to be black. It seems like if you want a black headunit these days you have to buy the high-end models. Eventually I will replace my Alpine headunit and EQ with just a headunit that plays mp3/CDs(probably Alpine). If Pioneer had their low end mp3/cd player in black I'd pick it up because the price is right.

    Here's my current setup:

        What's your favorite/best headunit for your M3?

Please post pics and state opinions.

        Thanks for helping me choose

I love mine, and people always trip at the phantom face. Alpine 7998 gets my vote. May be a few years old, but it's a perfect match to our amber interiors.

I couldn't find the 7998 when I went looking for a HU upgrade and ended up getting the 9835 (Alpine). Great HU that blows away the stock unit, plus its black and you can match the 4 left hand side buttons to the BMW amber.

I really like keeping the car looking stock, which is why I had a hard time getting an aftermarket unit. I looked for the CD 43 (the one in the Z3, MZ, etc) but couldn't find a used one, and the local idiots (dealership) told me they weren't able to order one for me. If I ever found one, I would gladly buy it and put it in.

The only thing that sucks is that I've lost function of my changer and the weatherband function.

Yeah, I must say that the stock stereo wasn’t “all that.” I had the HK upgrade in mine too, and after a couple of the speaker started buzzing on me I had to go nuts with after market goodies.

What sucked is that they guy that originally did the work on my car was a HACK. Ended up breaking my glove box, and several other little things. They ran the monster cables under the runner panel on the passenger side, and they barely fit under it. Made a gap between the runner and the joining panel in the back seat. My father and I were able to fix it, but what a PITA.

That is too bad about the changer and weather band. Maybe someone out here can give you some advice. I am clueless when it comes to wiring.

I plan on picking up the Nakamichi CD-400 tomorrow! I cant wait because im all about SQ and Nakamichi's 24bit DA converter is supposed to be bad ass, and it matches the amber perfect. But i have heard about a couple issues; not reading certain CD-R's and not having CD changer controls... Scoutmasterdave, if you could fill us in on any issues it would be appreciated. Thanks.

Just put in the Alpine 9827. I like the looks. I like the silver/blue. I like how its different than the amber.

Sirius, is it true you can't see the display during the daytime?

Just curious b/c I was contemplating on buying this HU.
