    Removing the Stock Radio/Head Unit

    Guys,

How the heck do you remove the stock radio (E36)? Please tell me it isn't the two torx screws under the tabs on the sides....

If so, what size T should I use?

    If not, how?

    Thanks,

    Jason

Its the two screws under the tabs.

Use a small alan wrench, supposedly its in-between sizes and bmw has a special tool for them, but a small alan wrench will work.

HAHA OK will they come all the way out when I am successful at removing them? Also, you sound like you've done it before.

Will a single din aftermarket unit like the P6500DVD from Pioneer fit where the stock unit was previously? I had heard that there is a metal wall back there and most aftermarket units won't fit...

      Thanks,

      Jason

I went to the dealer to have them taken out. Mine was more than happy to do it for free and send me on my way. I just installed a stereo and its a tight fit for multiple sets of rca's behind the deck but a normal size deck fits perfect and looks perfect.

Yes, it will come all the way out.

Theres is a tab back there thats used to support the factory headunit. I didn't have issue with my alpline fitting with that tab in place, nor with the pioneer that was installed when I got my car. So you should be alright.

My alpine came with a little metal cage which had mounting brackets on it, the headunit slid into this and had little tabs that clicked into place. The metal cage had little arms you bend that keep it from sliding out of the compartment.

What he said. Most HU's come with a cage you slide in, and push some locking tabs up to hold that into place. Then you secure the HU to the cage.
