Does anyone else always seem to hit the 6500rpm rev limiter in 3rd gear?????

I have only been driving my M for about 2 weeks now so I am getting pretty used to the shift points of the car. Due the the cars love to rev at first I would hit the limiter in 2nd (6800) by accident. But now Ive got that down. I have never hit a rev limiter as much as I have with this car I think its just because it pulls so nice!!!

But for some reason I still always seem to hit the rev limiter in 3rd gear (6500rpm) on the highway. I know that it goes down to 6500 in 3rd and up.

Am i the only one that hits that limiter????

I dont know why, maby because it just pulls so nice right around there and im usually not staring at the tach but then suddenly I feel the soft limiter kick in and im like *****!!.

I know its a soft rev limiter but is it bad to hit it like that in 3rd gear???

It has probably happened at least a handful of times since I have been driving it.

I hope the light jolt from the limiter isint loosening my oil pump nut or anything!!!

    Thanks!

Ummmm no - I dont think I've ever hit the limiter other than a few times when I first bought the car. Shift faster or something.

how fast are you going when you hit the rev limiter in 3rd?

The upper rev limit doesn't change for different gears.

You should pay more attention and stop hitting the rev limiter.

I hit it once in third when I was still new to the car. I was passing an eighteen wheeler and suddenly I saw a car coming at me in the distance. I guess I got a little nervous and didn't pay attension to the tach. The car was pulling so nicely and then *bam* I was jolted forward. I shifted to fourth and made the pass easily in time, but man did I feel bad about doing that to my car. Anyway, learn from your mistakes and don't continue to do them. If you're still hitting the rev limiter next week, then there's something wrong(and I don't mean with the car).

I like the previous idea: get a chip that raises your rev limiter to 7k and THEN you are guaranteed to not hit the 6.5k limiter. heh.

your first and second gear on a stock setup has a rev limiter a few rpms higher than 3rd,4th,and 5th for the engine safety purposes on obd 2 engines.. so 3rd gear at 6500 sounds right.. after you get a chip you will be able to shift a bit higher..

You guys crack me up, I asked a simple harmless question and all i get is replies like "shift faster" "uhh learn to drive". And none of which answered any of my questions.

So just forget the stupid question or stop using it to prove how great of a driver you are.

I asked a simple quesiton if anyone else hit it ,because it is very easy to hit.

Even when road and track tested the car they also said it was extremely easy to accidentaly hit are you going to tell me they cant drive either.

If you dident hit it that there was no need to reply to the question nor was there any need to question my driving abilities based on a light hearted question.

                    Oh and to answer sameguy

The limiter in 3rd comes on right above 90mph I think.

But im not staring at speedo the whole time because Im paying attention to the road ahead.

So I guess I hit it becasue the motor dosent even feel like its ready for the next gear. It seems so easy to hit for that reason alone ,which is why i asked the question, sorry I asked.

But I guess I just worded it bad, now as im re reading it I guess it does sound like im a idiot.

I normally can tell when the engine is about to redline by just hearing it. No I have not hit the rev limiter to answer your question. I think the reason why you are getting these responses is b/c it isn't the engines fault, it is the drivers fault that it happens.

You can either pay more attention or get a really heavy flywheel that will prevent the revs from going up so fast.

I also have heard that C&D testers are really the greatest either....

Yea I understand that it is a drivers problem, but it also have never owned a car the ran into it this easily. Even a honda S2000 or e30 M3 (both rev thriving cars with narrow power bands) have a good feel for where the limiter is.

So its not the cars fault but its the nature of its motor that causes me to accidentaly hit it (just the 6500 one). I dont hit it all the time ive hit it a handful of times and thought to myself wow this is so easy to hit, so i just wondered if my fellow M enthusiasts experienced the same thing. I wasent really looking for anyone to teach me how not to hit it either.

ehhhh I learned my lesson well! If you ask a stupid question, than you can expect stupid answers I guess!

S2000 = narrow power bands my ass. that thing is pulling from like forever becaue of its high rpm redline.

And please watch the tach and don't hurt your baby. because they will hurt you back.

I think he means the S2k is narrow because it is worthless until you hit like 5k. 5k-9k happens pretty fast in that thing.

I've hit the limiter in 2nd before because the car still feels like it wants to go more. So, I know what you're talking about.

Thanks man, that was the reply I was looking for, someone to say "yea I know what you mean".

Annnnnnyways a s2000 has a extremely narrow powerband, which I really like because once it gets there it ripps like a yamaha R6 (or honda F4I). It also is about as mean as a honda civic below 6 grand which makes it nice to live with in traffic and such.

The reason I mentioned it was because when it gets close to 9 grand you can sense its time for an upshift UNLIKE the 6500rpm one on my car where its pulling just fine and then.........the power just cuts out. It seems so easy to hit and in any other car I have driven (including a e46 M) it seems much harder to do. That was the only thing I was trying to say.
