Im trying to save some loot for other mods on the M, but using one of those cassette to portable CD player/ipod thing sux for my tunes. Is there any way I could hardwire my ipod to the factory 95' cassette unit>? Any crazy ideas guys? :smash:

Uhhhhh.... dont' you need at least an aux input?
If i can't get my old headunits sub controls to work in my bros jetta (I think the circuits burnt up), I may sell it as is. Aside from the unit not putting anything to subs, its fully functional, cd changer (old technology) controls, in dash cd, am/fm. Its an alpine unit. I just ordered a new one to get up with the times. (Mp3s and whatnot, and I wanted subs again... :P)

OK, Thanx Sirus. I was just checking if anyone has done a weird electrical mod like this before. So F-that idea. I guess im going to take my old JVC unit out of my other car, but a question follows:
There used to be a aftermarket alpine unit in my M. I have a JVC unit I want to put in. The whole car is wired up as far as subs, rca's, etc. Will my JVC unit work if I get a harness from CC or BB? Or do i need the harness from CC or BB and then a universal harness to connect the 2 harnesses together? I have heard other people needed to do this on aftermarket alpine headunits...:ratatat: BTW I HATE HARNESSES! :gun:

Heh. I got a BMW to universal harness, then an alpine to universal harness...
You should be able to get a JVC harness and then just plug it in.
Harnesses rule, saves you the nightmare of hardwiring and leaves your options way open. Just gotta get them all stuffed behind the head unit. Theres some extra room behind the insturment cluster you can slide wires into.

I know harnesses are life savers, but Im just being a lazy punk!

The only way would be to patch into the CD changer input. I am not certain, but I think there may be a company that makes an aux input adapter. If not, you could buy an adapter for an aftermarket CD changer that has an aux input on it. Do some web searching.

Hey fellas, I've actually been doing the homework on this recently and here's what I've found. There's a Co. called Soundgate.com which sells adapters/hardness'/mods/cabling/etc/etc for this setup. Here's the link for the BMW conversion: http://www.soundgate.com/products/aux-in/bmw.htm
The best place to buy this is on buy.com...cheapest I've found them:
for the module
http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=90130551&sp=1&loc=111
for the cable
http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=90130567&sp=1&loc=111
These parts are used to co-exist with existing factory disc changers. There are different parts used for just a standalone installation.
I've seen the Phatnoise unit in the BavAuto brochure but its just too steep and the ipod would be mobile so that's a plus.
Accessory page for the ipod:
http://www.apple.com/ipod/accessories.html
I'm thinkin about getting the holder/mount and the charger for now.
I never thought I'd buy apple anything but a buddy of mine just bought one and I was actually impressed...I'm hoping this install will work out. Since I just scored a gift cert from work for Best Buy I said 'what the hek'

Alpine will be releasing a unit this summer that will allow you to hook up your ipod and display it all on the alpine unit...
email them at - [email protected]
might be something to consider...

Nice Job everyone! Looks like I have alot more stuff to research. Mbobkat, so your saying if I buy the audio module, and Im pre-wired for the cd changer (which I am), I can just plug and play the ipod?
:rockband:
I got one on the way so I'll let you know as soon as I get it. I don't know for sure cuz this is new to me too. I talked to Magnolia Hi-fi who is an authorized reseller of the Soundgate products and they said I should be set. I have the same setup with an existing changer so they said I it should be cool. I'll take some pics if I can get it all wired and werkin.
Still gotta go get that ipod! I just cant decide between the 20 and the 40 gig

Thanx man, please keep me updated! As far as the ipod, I have the 10 gig, which I got around xmas, and I just filled up. I usually download a album or a live dj mix every other day from www.suprnova.org. I think its just enough room for a my musical selections. The 40 gig would be dope though :hmm:
