Drove a Porsche Turbo Today..Nearly Wet My Pants.

Well, today my parents came down for move out week of school to help me store stuff and whatnot and secretly didnt tell me about the new car.

I was expecting to see my dad roll up in his car (2002 Carbon Black M3) and instead he rolls up in his Silver Porsche Turbo with the factory Aero Kit...I swear my mouth fell open.

It only got better from there as he got out and asked if i wanted to drive. It was a ridiculous experience. The car has great power before 4k rpms...yet that power is pale in comparison to the power you feel after you hear the turbos spool and the back of the car drops with sheer force.

I am still smiling from this afternoon. I cant wait to drive this car some more.

In all, I am sorry he traded in his M3, but he couldnt have picked a better car in my opinion to upgrade to.

Ill have pictures of my car next to his once I finally get my wheels put on on Monday.

Dude, if I sat behind the wheel of a 911, I would probably just faint!

You drove a Porsche today, and I drove my wife's 1989 Nissan Maxim SI, because it rained today....

Made me realize there is a difference between transportation, and cars....

And you drove the king of cars today, lucky u

I cant tell you how lucky I feel to have a dad who is into cars and who is generous enough to give me my car..and let me drive his (with him in it).

Before he traded in his 2002 m3 he had become kind of relaxed about letting me drive it when i asked..hopefully he will become that way with the Turbo as well.

The car is truly awe-inspiring. I quickly made a left turn out of a driveway onto a stretch of rural highway (speed limit 65..and really never patrolled by cops) and i swear i think the car wanted to go airborne when i got into it. The rev-limit comes up fast (6500rpms) and the engine and turbos sound like a symphony behind your head.

The car is deceptively fast....I didnt take my foot out of the gas until the end of 3rd and I had just hit 100mph. I could have sworn I was doing 65-70. It is truly tame around town but an animal when you unleash it.

A really cool feature is that it shows you the boost pressure in the gague cluster. You can make it show a digital display and when stopped it reads 0.0bar..I saw it spike at .6 bar when i was really on it but Im sure it might go higher. Anyone know how bars of boost translate into psi of boost? I think .6 bar= 8psi but im not even close to sure.

I think he might eventually miss the room he had in the M3 or even the lower attention level provided by the M3..but he sure does love that power..I swear he giggled a little bit when he punched it out of a turn on this country road.

This car is an experience to say the least. Pics are a must of course (I have been here over a year and never posted a pic of my car..so i can kill 2 birds with one stone).

yep, they are damn nice. Got to drive a friends early 90's 911 before he sold it. Already told the wife since she don't want kids, I get toys...and one of those will include one very fast Porsche 911 before I'm too old to enjoy it!

            she didn't complain :-)

what year? Iv driven a few, never the 996 turbo tho.

Boost at idle should be less than zero. It should read negative, because there is vaccum when the turbo isnt pushing. Maybe the digital guage didnt go below zero.

Prety sweet car though. Those newer 911s are really refined cars. Try driving a late 70s or early 80s 911 turbo. Its hard as hell. Gears are a bitch to find, Turbo lag like crazy until almost 4000rpm, then the boost kicks in so fast it spins the rear tires. Very difficult cars.

Rode in a 96 turbo with coilovers, big brakes, racing clutch, for 2 runs at the autocross. Iv Never felt a car pull like that before. Felt like an old muscle car, except it pulls that way in all directions!

I'm pretty sure 1 bar is 14psi, so that comes out to be 8.4 psi at 0.6 bar. So your guess of 8 psi is probably right.

                  It is a 2002 996 Turbo.

I guess you are right about it not reading negative..but I think it to be a very cool feature..even if it a bit incorrect.

I have heard that the 930 turbos had such an unrefined turbo kick-in that in turns if you goose the throttle it immediately throws the tail out..sounds fairly dangerous to me if the Turbo is kinda all at once like that.

Apparently they tell you that the Turbo 911s will burn about 1qt oil/1000 miles, and I guess to help keep tabs on the oil there is check in which some kind of computer is able to measure the amount of oil in the car. There is a digital display and it has a mark for full at the top and one for empty at the bottom ( when i checked it, the indicator told me it was right in the middle of the acceptable amount...it was really a neat feature).

Its strange driving my car now..felt slow for the first few miles and then pretty good again. I will say that the brake pedal takes some effort..I guess there is alot of fluid to push to clamp the calipers. (the brake in the Turbo that is)

Overall...It is definantly the coolest car my dad has owned and that I have ever driven. (he has had a Ferrari 328 GTS and other Porsches in the past..but I dont remember them being all that impressive with sheer power like i felt today.

Driving this car really makes me wish I looked older or more serious so that I could take cars for test-drives..as it is I dont think dealers would let me drive anything I might enjoy. Do any of you guys ever go out with the M3 and test drive dream cars or the competition?

I've never had the opportunity to get behind the wheel of a 911 - I can only imagine how nice that must have been. Anyway, looking forward to seeing the pictures!

If you must know, 1 bar = 14.50377 psi. Usually, you see it rounded off to 15 psi. Cool experience though.

                          thanks for the info.

I didnt check but maybe it also displays in PSI, as well.

I have been up all night working before heading home from school and I cant stop thinking about hopefully driving it again tommorrow.

I thought modding my car was expensive....checking into some tuners I found out these cars are ABSURD when it comes to the cost of mods. Some exhausts are $5000 or so, I though Eisenman were bad for our cars at $1200.

Another thing I find ridiculous about the people who are modding their Turbos is that they actually opt for bigger brakes!!! They go from the massive stock Brembos to 15" 8 piston front, 6 piston rear even larger brembos..these things have got to throw you through the windshield!!

Modding my car seems like a bargain at the moment...a full Bembo kit for me would only be $5k instead of $9k for the Porsche.

I feel like i know more about the car having read about it last night, and I cant imagine how much some of these guys have put into their cars from 6 speed online and Rennlist.

The 911s are dry sump motors, not wet sump like the M3. This means that there isnt really a tank for you to get a dipstick reading from, so you get the dipstick reading while the thing is running. Im not sure the specifics, but im fairly sure thats how it works. My dad's boxter is like that, and also has the digital oil readout when you start the car. Correct me if im wrong, its been a while.

Man, that's awesome! My old man has an older 911 (not the turbo) and that thing is a blast...I can only imagine the 996 turbo, whoa! How does it handle? I'd think that thing's a$$-end would want to come around on you pretty quik if you're not careful. Geez, I'm green w/ envy. About the test driving...There's an S4 Avant at this dealer on my way to work and I've been meaning to go over there and give her a drive; i don't know if they'll take me seriously, I'll just have to park my M3 somewhere in sight so they can see it, maybe that'll make 'em try to sell it to me. 1 more thing, post some pics!
