    Fuel Gauge Problem!!!

    Fill up my car yesterday.

As I drive out of the gas station I noticed my gauge reads 1/2 a tank, a minute later it reads full, a couple a minutes later the gauge goes to empty red lights comes on, it repeated this cycle twice.

I call my mechanic, he says this is a problem with E-36's somewhat common.

To fix the problem he suggested clening the sensor and fuel pump or replacing both.

It will take 3 hrs to do the job at $70.00 an hr, $170.00 on parts. Total just under $400.00.

What do you guys think? I am been taking for a ride or is this about right?? Thanks Guys.

Looks like your fuel senders are going bye-bye.

The price seems accurate. Its kinda a pain to replace thoes things. Seen it done before... you gotta like the smell of gas though.

Sirius, my man thanks for the info.

I think I could wait some time before I spend $400.00. My mechanic said it should be ok as long as I keep the tank full.

I had a similar problem but my fuel gauge read empty so I filled it up to max. The gauge didn't change at all and stayed on empty. Not sure what the problem is. Fuel sensor maybe?

Fuel sending unit is taking a dive, but no way that's a $400 replacement. I spent about half, if not a quarter that when mine started to fail.

might not be a real fix, but it worked for me.

My gauge was acting spastic it would flip from full to empty and back and forth. One day I just starting yelling at it and thumping the gas guage and it worked. I swear it has not acted up since and its been about 6 months.

Well, this isn't about gas gauges but it has to do about fuel. I was traveling, and i knew i needed gas, but there was not any stations around, so i was going to drive to this one a little ways down the road. I got there and it had been closed for like 5 minutes, so I was forced to make it home on what little I had left. I finialy got home, and I just passed my house up and went straight to walmart, so I could use a card since it was later at night. I filled it up with ~15.56 gallons. I was pretty sure that our tanks hold 16 gallons, so I believe I am like the luckiest guy around. That is probably the closest i'll ever get to running out of gas.

FLY G-550, I know what it's like to be on a budget. You know...for the meantime, you could just use your odometer. Unless you're driving with your foot in the pedal the entire time, using 200mi as your "low gas" point and 250mi as "out of gas", you'll be fine. Just make sure you reset the trip odometer everytime you refuel.
