    strange clicking noise.... vanos??

    Hi all:

I've tried doing a search and most of the results are pointing to the VANOS for this weird clicking noise I started hearing tonight. I drove my car the whole day and everything was fine. When I went out at night, I noticed that I'm hearing this clicking noise. As I speed up, the noise got kinda louder. It does sound that it's coming from my wheels so I started assuming it's something in my tires/brakes.

The reason for this assumption, is that I changed from my OEM rims to my new 18" rims/tires this morning so I may have touched something when I replaced my rims. But it makes me wonder why I never heard it the whole day. Anyways, when my windows are all close, the ticking noise sounds like it's coming from under the car. But when I have my windows are open, it does sound like it's coming from my front wheels.

When the car is stopped and idling, no ticking sound. At about 20 mph, I don't hear any clicking. When I get to 30-35 mph I hear the ticking/clicking to start.

So what do you guys think?

Does oil starvation cause clicking and will it click even if the car is stopped, or will it go away? With the windows close, if its my VANOS will i hear it loud enough?

    thanks all...

I'd be willing to bet it's your new wheels. Re-tighten all the lug nuts, and if that doesn't do it, you better have your tires re-mounted and balanced to the wheel. There was a post on this situation in the E46 forum a while back, try doing a search...

You can always go along with the old school way of putting it back the way it was and go from there. Sure, it sucks to do it over, but it's not that much work. Jack up, remove, replace.

Thanks guys... Here's what I did.. checked my oil level.. still good, so I took that out of the equation.... while I was driving I noticed that it sounded like my tranny but when I lifted up the e-brake, the sound went away...

That was the problem  .. the e-brake for some reason was causing this clicking sound.. So I guess I need to adjust it..

Any ideas on how to adjust my e-brake??? Or what I need to adjust??

        Thanks all..
