    master key & side moulding

Anyone know if it's possible to order one of the "nice" master keys from BMW? The dealer finally got me a "master" key (since they only sold me the car with one key), but it looks identical to the key I already have (all black and plastic). Isn't there a nicer one available? Not a huge deal though.

Also, the side moulding on my passenger side door came off a little bit. The dealership said they could fix it with a clip while another BMW dealership (Knauz) told me I needed to replace the entire moulding ($180 + labor). Is there any way I can pop it off to see what it really needs? The dealer where I bought the car said if I pop it off I might break all the clips and might not be able to put it back but I've read of ppl who paint their mouldings. I don't think this dealership really knows what they're doing anyways.

Yes there is. Its about $50.

The moulding it like $40 or something. 180 is retarded.

I don't think you can order the clips seperatly, as the new mouldings come with them.

Are those mouldings glued on or just stay on by the clips? How easy are they to pop off?

They are held on by clips.

Go out, grab the end of one and pull. May feel like you're breaking it, but it'll pop out of the door.

Ordered the key today for $50 and they said they would have it for me in 2 days! I went to a BMW dealership here that doesn't have the greatest rep but it surprised me when they said that. It's the one with the light thing too.

I had the side moulding checked. Turns out there was a big blob of some kind of compound that was interfering with the seating of the moulding. The service guy at the dealership had to scrape it off and they also changed the clip I think. Apparently rather than replacing the clip the previous owner or dealer that I bought the car from tried to use this compound to get the end of the moulding to stick. Shoddy. I slipped the guy a $20 for his troubles since he wasn't charging me. Hopefully that was fair enough.

Next project will be an alarm for my car, thinking a Viper for now...

I can post a pic once I get mine, but I think the emblem in the master key is actually colored. It cost me $39 for the master key and $6 more for the LED.

UK Key but may be same, Sirius could confirm.

Apologies for the poor quality but the photo is from my phone.

WTF? :???: both of those keys/fobs are yuck!

Get a real one with integrated alarm "fob" (not really a "fob" if it's integrated though).

                      See pic: http://www.m3forum.net/m3forum/showpost.php?p=132102&postcount=14

The three buttons are (default) arm, disarm and courtesy light.

Oh, and you can buy the side molding clips separately, they're quite inexpensive as well.

Thoes keys didn't make it to the US until the E39 5 series, the E46 three series, and the E38 7 series.

But on the US remote, the third button is for the trunk, or boot if you prefer. And if you have an alarm, it doubles as the panic button. F that curtosy light.

M3AN : That (radio) key was also Available in the UK as an option. It wasn’t very popular as according to my dealer it wasn’t compatible with the BMW Cat 1 alarms (The Ugly fob in my previous post) and most UK insurance companies specified Cat 1 due to the high theft risk over here … :gun:

As reference for all, my Manual says that the cars should come with four keys :

                          · Master Key : With torch (like mine and Sirius’s) or radio key option (like M3AN’s)

                          · Master Key : Black boring one with moulded badge.

                          · Valet Key : Grey boring one with moulded badge.

                          · Plastic Emergency Key

Sirius : Don’t be pi**ed about the M3 badge, its very similar to those that come on the wheels …

Yep, that's what my manual says about keys as well... should have four, as they're described by WD'

And Sirius, I've spent so much time on this board that I actually use the terms "trunk" and "hood" now...

The one I have - "radio" - is programmable so the light button can be whatever... holding down the arm button is for panic on mine.

You'd think it would have been less expensive to have just one of everything... oh well, blame the Germans!

Yeah, none of these keys are as cool looking as the new E46 keys. Even the one with built in alarm stuff is ugly...though more functional.
