Might buy an M3... need your advice

First off - I know... I misspelled Manhattan. Typed too fast and didn't look at it... oh well...

I'm in the market for an M3 (once I buy one, I'll be a regular here - I'm a huge fan of the forums and you guys obviously know your #$&@).

    I'm looking at a 1995 M3, 5-speed, lux model, 2-Door, 68k, totally stock, second owner, excellent condition

The owner just had $2,800 worth of "work" done at the BMW dealership because they found some "things" during the inspection performed for a prospective buyer. I see this last piece as good news - any 10 year old car would need something during one of these inspections and everything that was found was fixed.

The guy wants $15,000 for the car.

    1. Does that seem like a good price?

    2. Anything about a '95 that's good or bad?

    3. Are these cars "notorious" for anything?

Thanks for any guidance and insight you can provide!!!

That's about an average price for a 70K car as long as it's in good shape and the maintenence is up to date which it sounds like it is. I bought my 97 sedan 5spd for 14300 with slightly less miles but 15k is reasonable.

The 95's have obd1 3.0L motors instead of obd2 3.2's but they both makes the same hp on paper. OBD 1's respond to mods much better. They have a different final drive and some subtle exterior differences (kidney grills etc) Make sure the water pump prop has been changed to metal and the rear strut mounts have been replaced. Other than that, go for it.

I have heard the 94-95 3.0 is the smoother revving engine and the 96-99 3.2 is torquier. Performance is supposed to be similar overall. The 95 is OBD1 and supposedly easier to modify if you are predisposed to do such things. The $2,500 worth of repairs sounds good, can't really comment on the price. I would imagine a 98-99 in the $18-19 range would be cheaper to own a few years down the road when you factor in depreciation.

Seems kinda pricy to me. I picked up my 97 with 101k for 12,500....

Seems high. Lots of cars out there, they sell for less than book and if you wait around you'll find a perfect car at the perfect price.

            i'd skip it:

            it's a 95, it's lux.

            IMHO

Should I avoid a '95... or is it that it's just getting old?

Not necessarily, it has a different engine to the newer models though. Check out the FAQ section on this site and the M Registry @ http://www.bmwmregistry.com/faq.php which will explain the differences (between E36 3.0 and E36 3.2).

Come back and ask more questions...
