8 qts of oil, is that right??

well I changed my oil today and put in 7 qts and a new filter. I let it run for a minute to fill the filter. I check the stick and it says I'm still a quart low. My brother said his 97 takes 7 qts. Does the 95 hold more oil??

No. Its supposed to be 7.

Had this problem on a friends car. BMW says 7.

In case you wanted another opinion...no...7. Did you check the dipstick?

edit: I just saw you checked the dipstick. Sorry about that

The Bentley says 7.2 quarts. I just put 7 in there.

BMW's info is in liters.. which it converts to about 7.3 quarts. Start with 7.

Although, looks like your dipstick is messed up....

According to information I've seen, the S50 takes slightly more oil than the S52.

Also, I've heard that our cars can take up to 8 qts with no ill effects.

Bently's 1992 to 1998 BMW 3-Series SERVICE MANUAL specifies 6.9qts for an M50 and M52, with filter change.

However, my car's "Owners Manual" say 6.3qts with filter change.

I have always put 6.5qts, for a dip-stick reading that's right in the middle. So I believe Bently's Service manual is spot-on.

                    ^^^ Same as stated in the '97 owner's manual: 6.9 quarts = 6.5 litres.
