repaint hood or buy a new one?

My hood is in need of a makeover. I was quoted $450-500 to repaint the whole hood but isn't that almost the cost of buying a brand new hood??

I want to say that a new hood is around $600 or 700 for our cars. Its cheaper to get it repaired/painted.

Instead of getting a new part, paying for the paintwork, install and overhaul.

Since yours is cosmos black, its a good idea that the shop doing the work blend your fenders also for a proper color match.

Now that I think about it, I probably overshot the price of the hood somewhat. But it'll still end up being more economical to get it repaird instead of replaced.

Since your car is black you should find a group buy for a carbon fiber hood. You can get one for about that price pretty easy. It'll look good, or just have yours re-painted.

I agree, go CF. Make sure it's clear coated, though. Makes all the difference.

I hate the look of CF. Weight savings is awesome.. but it looks like complete ass.

We have an E36 M in the shop with a CF hood, and it looks terrible.

Someone have a picture somewhere of a CF hood on a cosmos? Getting the fenders painted is another $200/ea?? What about blending it into the side doors or is that not necessary?

You don't need to blend into the doors unless you're painting just the fenders.

Most of the time, you don't have to blend panals unless you're replacing one, or if any repairs have taken place within 8 or so inches of the adjoining panal.

You want to blend the fenders when you paint the hood of a metallic car because the hood is a very large panal, and no matter how hard a shop tries, they'll never get the metallics in the paint they shoot to lay the same as the ones on the fenders.

Perhaps try to go get a full detail on your car...they will buff it and blend in any miscolors...and then wax it to look like new again.

I went to one place but they said whatever messed up the clearcoat on the hood (bird crap or rock chips probably) did a good enough job so that buffing it wouldn't get it out. The clearcoat is clearly damaged, but the paint underneath still looks ok. In addition to these areas, there is some evidence that someone has tried to pop the emblem off the hood leaving a couple of gouges in the clearcoat in that area as well. All of this will seem minor to most people but will nag at enthusiasts like us.

Sirius, I understand about the blending in of fenders finally. I was thinking they had to repaint the entire fender for some reason.

Well. When you blend a panal, the color coat is taken into the panal to be blended and slowly let off, creating the illusion of a blend. Then the entire panal is re-clear coated.

If I remember right, Sirius said ~$800 to get the hood repainted properly (i.e. blending, etc).

Group buy for CF hood - $525, shipped. Obvious cost savings. In addition, you'll never have to worry about stone chips again (my reason for replacing the hood) b/c it's not painted.

I saw pics of Cosmos cars w/ CF hoods when the GB was first posted. Might be some in that thread, I dunno. It looks good...subtle, not riceer. Weight savings is only 20lbs or so, insignificant on our cars.

                              It's a no brainer, IMO.
