    1-2 shift

I am still a learning manual driver and have gotten everything pretty much down, starting and not rolling back, shifting, rev-match downshifting, however the 1-2 shift in our cars is a tough one. It seems every time I do it, it's really jerky. I can make it not jerk by really feathering out the clutch and not getting back into the gas very quickly but this makes acceleration slow. I dont mean a full throttle start, those are actually pretty good, its just tho general spirited starts where you shift around 4-4.5k and then shift into 2nd, i cant seem to do those smooth very well.

Can anyone help me at all? :hmm:

Give it time, you'll learn. I've been driving 5-speeds for 11 years and my 1-2 shift in the M is jerky every once and while too. :banghead:

More and more practice. When I was first learning stick, I took my 320i out for about 4 hours and didn't return home until I quit stalling.

So I still stall now? Sure... once in a blue moon, or maybe in a car I am not used to, which could be quite often becuase I drive an array of cars every day....

You just got to learn the clutch catch point and get used to it.

Get a clutch stop too, as you can have it to right past the engagement point of the clutch, and it'll be in the same spot each time.

I wouldn't be surprised if the CDV is f*cking up your shifts.

Nice post kbc8090! Im in the same boat you are, but its so much fun when you get the 1-2 shift just right. BTW, when this "jerking" occurs, does it put excess stress on any of the trany parts? I know my gubo (sp?) is cracking and I dont want to f-it up just yet.

I am rockin the 1 - 2 shift. the only times its crappy is 1) when a hotty has my eyes 2) really sleepy 3) doing something else.

            So mostly I always make a good 1 - 2 shift.

I drove with a cracked guibo for close to 30,000 miles. No ill effects.

It is a tough shift, I agree. I found that hitting the clutch in faster helped a lot. Don't be lazy about it. In this car, either you do fast, clean shifts, or slower granny shifts...it doesn't respond well to anything in between somehow.

I'll try that tomorrow on the way to work, thanks - thats what i do under full throttle shifts and it does it pretty smooth, i guess i havent tried it with a normal shift yet.

Yes, practice will help somewhat , but there is no magic thing you can do to "cure" this. It's a function of the car.

I've been driving stick since I took my driver's test 10+ years ago and when I don't drive them M for a while, I jerk the 1-2 shift the first couple of times. It happens. The car can handle it.

Take the REVS up a bit higher in 1st gear and try it again. If you take them to 3500-4000 under light throttle, then shift quickly, it is much smoother. Either that, or shift very early around 1500 RPM's.

It is a tough shift and after 2 years I still mess it up every now and then. Finally, you could ride the clutch a bit longer with some extra gas and that seems to help, but it may also wear your clutch down a bit quicker.

Ditto on that. I find that if I shift between 3500 - 4000 it's a lot smoother. If I do it at around 3000 it's a rough one, and there's a big clunk/thud noise makes it feel like the shifter doesn't want to move out of 1st. So I shift at either 2000 or above 3500

Odd. I don't have problems like that at any rpm....???

just depends how smooth you let out on the clutch and when you give it gas in the friction zone.
