im looking at getting some 18x8 rims and the offset is 35mm. If i use 225/40/18 as tires will i be ok or will i get some rub from them. I own a 98 m3 that has been lowered but im not sure how much it has been. thanks for any help.

35mm offset is correct for E36 8" wide wheels. I have 17x8 33mm offset wheels that work great on my lowered suspension. I believe if you go to 18's, you do need to stick with 8" wide wheels and less than 225mm wide tires to ensure you don't have rubbing issues. So it sounds right to me (but I am far from an expert).
By the way, the car will handle better and be quicker if you went with 17x8 235/40 instead... Plus the wheels and tires would be less expensive

I wouldn't go that narrow on the back tires (I had that setup on my last car). 18x8.5's will fit on the rear with the right offset and 9 inch wide wheels will require minor fender rolling.
Why go only 9 inch? Go with the widest possible application on the rear like I did, 9.5 inch with some FAT 255/35-18s. I didn't have to roll any fenders, I would never risk cracking the paint like that. Just make sure you get wheels with the correct offset and you should be good to go.~ http://www.m3forum.net/gallery/data/501/24489Pic2-med.jpg
