    Help!

My 95 M3 has been at the shop for two days now for what was supposed to be a rutine Vanos job...however, they got everything back in and running good but then my primary tensioner wasn't getting any pressure and so they had to replace a part in it. When they got the new tensioner that is for my 95, it turns out that it is different than the one that is already in my motor. I thought that maybe the previous owner had put in the newer style tensioner but I couldn't find it in any of my records. My mechanics are baffled and I'm slowly watching this $700 job turn into a 1500 dollar job. My car's in there as we speak....Suggestions?

Not much you can do if parts keep failing....

Yeah this is pretty $hitty...However, I've been talking to my mechanics and they actually said that the new tensioner they got is shorter than the one they pulled out my engine (b/c the new one is from the S52 motor, which you're supposed to replace the old tensioner with anyway). Interesting...Hopefully this works, the're calling me back .

Did you just ask to have the vanos replaced or did they diagnose a rattle and said it was due to the vanos unit? If they decided the vanos was a problem then it sounds like your getting the run-around. They've installed the vanos and the rattle still exists and now they're blaming it on a tensioner. The shorter tensioner is an updated part and it might fix it but probably not. Keep us posted on what they say. And if the rattle is still there and they said the vanos was the cause you shouldn't be paying for any parts that they throw at it!

Agreed...I went in a month ago and they diagnosed the vanos. I previously thought that the tensioner was going and was going to replace it but I took it to these guys and they said "Vanos". To tell you the truth, I really think that the vanos was shot too b/c I could feel the vibrations on the front/top of the valve cover as opposed to down lower by the primary chain and tensioner. We'll see, I was just shocked that I knew to replace the S50 tensioner with the S52 tensioner and they didn't...

              Alright...An update.

It's week after I took her in to the shop and I went to get her today. New Vanos in and a new primary and secondary tensioner to match, but then there was a new noise that sounds like buzzing coming from under the very front of the valve cover. We took the valve cover back off and pushed down on the secondary tensioner and oil squirted out the little valve and oozed around the piston but compressed with very little force which concerned all of us that the tensioner wasn't getting any oil pressure and staying primed. Does anyone have any experience with these secondary tensioners? Also, Beemertek said something about the spring-plate going bad, what's that all about?
