    EWS Bypass

This alarm/remote start install is driving me insane! I figured I'd forego the clutch issue at this point and work on the EWS bypass. I have a DEI 555u module that I had leftover from a previous install. BMW calls for a 555b module. The techs at service center swear that they are the same. I can't get the damn thing to start?? I've tried wiring it every which way and nothing. Weird huh? One interesting thing is that if I stick the key in the ignition and do not turn it, the I try the remote start, the car does start. This leads me to believe that the signal isn't reaching the EWS module. Another thing is, if I start the car, then shut it off, then try the remote start without the key in the ignition, it starts? Does the EWS remember the code for a short moment? I think I may go buy the 555B module and see if that works, unless I'm missing something? Please shed some light.

My firends kit had a module that learned the EWS code, and then simulated it when he started the car.... I'll ask how/what he did.

Sure enough, the DEI service reps seem to know jack $hit. I bought the 555B transponder, and the damn car started right up. Amazing huh? If anyone tells you that the universal 555U transponder works with BMW, DO NOT LISTEN TO THEM!! The only thing I have left to do is bypass the clutch, wire up a relay for the automatic window rollup, clean up the wiring, and put everything back together. I will keep everyone informed how it goes.

OK, I'll see what I can do when I finally complete it.

Wish I saw your post earlier, I installed my RS 1 month ago... It was painful. One addon I did use was a magnetic system on the gear shifter that only let the car start remotely if it is in neutral. That way my car wont be rolling awy from me if I start it in gear, (I have seen this, very funny to watch if it is not you car)

As for the magnet, I JB welded an alarm magnet switch to the gear shifter and lined it up at neutral positio.

This is exactly what I had planned on doing. I was hoping to find a Radio Shack "normally open" alarm window or door switch and wire that in. Is this what you used? Did you have to make a bracket for the switch to mount? Pictures would be great if you had them

Ill try to snap some picts when I get a chance. Plan on getting JB Weld, a metal bracket, and the magnet system. I used a demo from a security system that I had in my tool box.

I too was having painful issues with the EWS III in the 2004 E46's. I tried 3 different bypass modules until i made one myself.... 1st was the 555U universal...(Nope), then was the 555B module (Nope), and lastly the 556 which was supposed to replace the 555 models....NOPE :banghead:

What i ended up doing is buying another Transponder Ring from BMW

(PN # 61 35 6 900 016) ($24.99) and used that in conjunction with 2 standard 30 AMP Bosch Relays. For those intereseted, read on:

                        1) The original Transponder Ring which is installed has 2 wires coming out. This connection needs to be severed and connected via the relays. Do one wire at a time. The new transponder ring is going to be installed as well using the same wire as the one from the original. Cut one of the wires and connect it to 1 relay as follows:

Pin 30 - Car side of the connection

Pin 87A - Ignition side of the connection

Pin 87 - Wire from NEW transponder ring

                        Pin 86 - Constant +12V

Pin 85 - Status Wire from Alarm or any (-) pulse

Once this is done, do the EXACT same thing to the other wire. This will in effect, activate the relay once a (-) signal is receieved and then will connect PIN 30 with PIN 87 which is the desired response. Viola. Attached is a makeshift diagram. Any questions, PM ME.

The E36 and E46 systems are wired up differently. I don't think that would work on our cars.
