    Buying a high mileage M3

Hey guys, I hope I don't get flamed for asking a redundant question but i didn't see other threads regarding the high mileage issue. The car i'm looking at is a 1995 Coupe with 161,000 miles on the chasis. From what he tells me (and he has paperwork to prove it), the motor and transmission were replaced at around 80,000 when the previous owner shifted from 5th to 2nd on the highway. I've driven the car and it feels superb, the car looks nearly mint. But i'm still wary on what kind of miantenence I will be looking at.. Any input on any of this would be greatly appreciated. I've only been here a short time but it really seems like you guys know everything there is to know about the E36 chasis thanks in advance.

Yeah, that hood bothers me too. Did you do a DMV run on the car? Look closely on the inside walls of the engine bay and underneath the left front fender. I would definitely have it inspected by a mechanic, no matter how well you think it's running.

The price is about right for that kind of mileage, though. But the car looks clean.... eace:

          Good luck!

Look for BMW serial numbers on each body panel, doors, etc. It appears to be repainted from the gloss I see. Under the hood also appears to be not the correct glosss if it is Cosmos. The price of $12,500 might be reasonable if all the little things have been done at this mileage. The little things do add up to big repair bills if they have not been done. Don't be fooled by detailing (Although the interior is slightly dirty). I prefer to buy a car that has not been detailed under hood so I can see what is what in terms of leaks, but whenever I have sold one of mine it is primped up, so this counts for little.

As Cali M3 mentions, get it inspected by an independant shop and spend a few hundred if need be. Very often, the cheapest M3 costs a lot more to own. Good luck.

it looks like the edge of the hood goes over the the driver's side front fender a bit, instead of sitting flush
