HK headunit replacement and speaker question

    hey,

i just got my 98 m3 with the HK system. i have a few questions:

    1. is it possible to replace the stock deck and add an amp to the existing 3 way speakers? I used to have an 89 525i (e34) which had a 3 way system and all the speakers were individually wired to the stock amp so i couldnt easily hook them all up to a new amp without a crossover so i ended up just replacing them. I am considering getting an eclipse 8454 head unit,..any thoughts are apreciated.

    2. i have a set of JL XR 3 ways that were in my E34 and i am wondering if i have room to put this set in the e36,... i havnt taken the door panel off yet but it dosnt look like i could fit a 4 inch in the mid spot for the door and i dont think i would have the depth either. this set is a 6" woofer, a 4" mid and a 1" tweeter. http://www.jlaudio.com/evolution/XR653CS.html

if i cant use these i will have to sell them and then think about another set,

    3. Has anyone ever had any experience with Diamond audio component speakers,.. i am considering the HEX series and possible using a silk dome tweeter. ANY other recomendations would be appreciated and if anyone knows of a 3 way system that fits that would be great,..

sorry for the long post. I really apreciate everyones time.

    1. Yes, what you thought about doing to the e34.

    2. Possibly the 6" if you take out the padding in the kick panel, and definintely not the 4" because of depth and the 1" will fit.

    3. Don't waste your money on high end components if you're not going to image them correctly. But if you really have to get a 3 way system, get a basic set like Audiobahn's 3-way system, very inexpensive compared to MB Quarts(if they still have any), Dynaudio, and Diamond's stuff. Get your hands on some Focal, Genesis, old a/d/s/, McIntosh, or Orion Concept 97.1....if you go high end, go all out.

The UK? Not exactly sure myself. I can see if I can get a hold of them for you, but it will be for a while, a long while...like months(xmas)....cause I'm in college right now and dont' have access to any information about car audio anymore as of now. I know I can get you MB Quarts, Memphis, and Dynaudio(I highly recommend this above Focal even).

What I mean by imaging is directing the sound production to your ear or positioning the speakers so the timing will be correct. Meaning the sound coming from all 4 speakers reach your ear at the same time, and in phase. i.e. The tweeter mounted inside the component speaker, or having the tweeter pointed to your ear, the mid range pointed to your ear... etc....

Obviously in this car, your mid bass speaker (usually the 5 1/4" in the kick panel) is pointed at your foot. This is great if your ears were on your ankles, unfortunately they're not. Some people say having only the front sound stage is good enough, i agree if this was in a toyota; but in our case I think the rear sound stage is very important for filling in the warmth of mid range ( like in a piano, or a saxophone, or male singers even) that our shoes absorb down in the kick panel.

If you have an equalizer, that would be great, you could boost the frequencies that are lost down in the kick panel. But I warn you, an equalizer is just another source where alternator whine can enter, and this car is bad about alternator whine.

*EDIT* I can get you Audiobahn's too. All at a discounted price too. So what you see online will be cheaper if I get you speakers.
