    head unit install question

    hey,

i just got a new cd player and im trying to figure out my install options,...

    im replacing a HK system.

Ive heard a lot of people talk about using the stock HK speakers with a new deck and amp, how do you wire the HK speakers to a new amp without a crossover?

Also, does anyone have a wireing diagram for the head unit wires?

and where is the stock amp?

    thanks for your help,

The stock amp is on the driver's side behind the panel in the trunk. As for the wiring color codes of the head unit, go to Circuit City or something and reference it from a Metra plug. You might be able to find it online too, just give it a search.

I would not recommend wiring those speakers directly to the amp without a crossover of some sort. To wire up the HK speakers with an aftermarket amp, you'll need non-polarity capacitors in their respected farad ratings to cut the right frequencies for each speaker. My suggestion, wiring up an aftermarket amp to your stock speakers is a complete waste of time unless you're going to get aftermarket speakers.

Most of the time it is best to feed the factory amplifier directly if all you are doing is adding a head unit. Just get a Scosche or Metra Plug for your vehicle and match up the wiring colors to your head unit's harness. Make sure to wire the blue wire from your scosche or metra harness so your factory amplifier will turn on. Negative effects? Your volume will max out early. For example, an alpine radio for instance reaches its maximum unclipped output between volume 23 and 28. You will probably reach full undistorted output between 15 and 20 while feeding your factory amp. No biggie. It's also a PITA if your head unit beeps every time you press a button. Most of the time you can turn those beeps off though in the head unit's menu. Let me know if I can help. By the way, my shop mail orders installation parts. You need a BW01 harness and a VWA antenna adapter from scosche. The pair is $17 shipped anywhere in the states. Good luck!

You won't believe how I just lucked out. I went to the local audio tuner shop (Auto Illusions in Moon Township, PA) looking to replace my stock head unit. I've been having issues with the original and did not wanted to swap it out becasue the integrity of the stock appearance works great for me. Anyway, it turnes out that the shop was working on a 1999 M3 and they just gave me the unit from that vehcile!!! It's the BMW Business version - what luck! I'm a happy camper right now. I can turn around and drop the coin into perf mods insead of a sound system. Bill Regas at Auto Illusions kicks serious tail!!! Talk about customer prospecting and service...

Hmm, what to do next...AA exhaust, coilovers, s/w upgrade, CAI... where to start...
