New problem with my '97 M3

My '97 M3 climate control has been going on and off by itself without warning or reason. Has any else with a 3-series had this problem before? Any ideas (without taking a second mortgage for the BMW dealer). The AC blows ice cold when it decides to work. It goes off from anywhere between thirty seconds to ten minutes. :hmm: Thanks.

Final stage unit. About 120 bucks... Remove the driver side under panel, the knee bolster and it should be sitting on the side of the blower housing which is on the top right of your gas pedal. The should be wiring attached to it.

If you're from socal LA area I will sell you mine for 50 bucks. I bought 2 cuz I couldn't wait for my order to come so I just walked inside the dealership and bought one then my internet order came 2 days later. Its hot in heeerrree.

Thanks. I'm in Ct. How large is the unit? Are you willing to ship UPS or USPS?

      It's hot here too.

Its a small unit. U have the digital climatecontrol right? I could send it through ups I guess... Let me know if you want to do it. Or call me @ 818.288.2369

Yes definitely. Shoot me your mailing address via email and I'll get a check to you ASAP & I'll add about five or six bucks for shipping. You could also send it US Postal service for about four bucks. Either way, that's what I need. Thanks.

It's actually unlikely to be the final stage unit.

The link posted above is the one you'll need to fix erratic air-con behaviour (e.g. display comes on and off at will). If you search next time you'll find that link posted like a million times.

I've done this and it worked perfectly. One little cap and BMW want to replace the entire unit... :banghead:

In fact, this link should go in the FAQ section... mods?

Display would dim, the compressor would be running, but the blowers would come one and go off in spurts, ICE COLD when it ran, but the hotter it got the shorter time the A/C would run.

I did this fix the day I bought the car, it was 100+ outside and I was wet by the time I got home, went inside the garage, closed the doors, cut the A/C on, and spent about 2 hours removing the old cap and soldering in the new and $0.50 for the part at Radio shack. 2 hours included the time to drive into town for the capacitor. Saved me about $1000 on the deal for the car.

Never looked back, funny though, the local Stealer wanted to replace the entire climate control unit at around $245 and 5 hours labor... go figure.

Lol, 5 hours of labor to do something that takes no less than 15 minutes. :haha:

The same exact thing happened to my climate control. I don't know what the exact problem is but i know its not the "final stage unit". I found a guy on ebay who sells his services to fix it. It cost me $56 shipped. And this guy sent it back to me the next day. The whole process took 3 days. It's been working perfectly ever since. DO NOT GO TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR THIS. They will sell you another unit for approx. $400 and on top of that they have to PROGRAM it to work in your car. SO that way they can rip another hundred or two out of your pocket. Go on ebay and put down BMW CLIMATE CONTROL or E36 CLIMATE CONTROL. Just fool around until you find it.
