    Notchy Steering

hello. i have a 97 m3 and last night i was drivign home... i could have possibly been doing some hard turns but my steering all of a sudden got notchy and i did several all the way left to all the way right and back n forth while moving forward down my street and on about the 4th right, i heard a hard click in my steering...after that it still sounds like.. there well.

it sounds like a wire sticking outa something n rubbing against something as my wheel turns.... what could it be? it's happened before but it stopped for about a good month an didn't come back till last night... any help would be appreciated thank you

Check all the suspension componets for looseness. Check the sway bar linkages too.

Yes. Check the joints to make sure they are still secured. Its kinda hard to debug something like this over the net though, as I can't hear it myself.

i think he's talking about the scratchy noise is coming from his steering wheel. not his suspension. I just recently purchased a 95 M3 and i have the same problem.

it's also possible that he knows what i'm taklin bout and it still could be the suspension but yes he's right

the noise is coming from right under the steeringwheel... it's nothing as far as the suspension goes.. it jsut sounds like ... ball bearins running out alube behind the wheel

what you all think? neone else go through this?

You mean that squeek squeek squeek while you turn the wheel... and the wheel feels loose?

Thats a common issue on these cars. I believe its called a slide bearing, its right under the steering wheel. You need some special tool to take it out, and put the new one in.

Mine does the same crap... I am just too lazy to take apart my steering coloum.

if my warrantee says it covers rack and pinion

                      does that mean it's included?

of course you've already checked the wheel well plastic linings to make sure they haven't dropped and are rubbing wheels? (mine rub on sharp turns of wheel).

The plastic that lines my front wheel fender wells rubs on my tires when I turn the wheel sharply to the left or to the right. I'm using OEM wheels/tires sizes on the front. Is it possible that this is the problem you're experiencing?
