Do our cars take regular power steering fluid?

My car seems to be whining a bit around corners at slow speeds. Just noticed it yesterday for the first time. so last night i was looking through my manual for power steering and it doesnt tell you what to put in it and it doesnt even tell you where the reservoir is. So this morning i will be going out there dressed nicely in my shirt and tie, and dont want to get all dirty looking for this thing and filling it. Where is the power steering located, is it labeled for me (although its going to be pretty dark out there yet) and can i put regular autozone or pepboys power steering fluid in it?

    thanks

ATF is fine... you should check your rack for damage (or possible bad rubber hoses) when you get a chance... not this morning of course : )

I don't remember exactly where it is, and it's raining or I'd check, but I do remember it being obvious. : ) Due to an unforunate accident, I had to replace the entire rack a few months back... I don't remember it taking that much to fill it completely, so you won't need much.

Takes ATF. Look down below the intake manifold, you'll see a star shaped cap.. thats the resivour for it. Its also common for the hoses from the tank to leak some. Its way down deep in the engine bay by the block.. I don't recommend trying to add stuff in a shirt and tie.

As I recall anything that takes ATF will also take power steering fluid. It doesn't always work in reverse. There are subtle differences between the two.

BTW I have refilled my reservoir with synthetic power steering fluid and have no problems. (I had it laying around).

I also have a very cruddy rubber hose connected to the bottom of the reservoir. Any idea how hard this is to replace? Can I get a piece of hose with clamps or will this be an OEM only piece?

        Thanks

my hoses were 'ok' but not great... they came with the rack, so I'm not completely sure you can buy them separately (worst case, I'd buy hoses the same basic size and get some clamps : )

There was a thread here about this a few months ago... someone replaced the hoses with non-oem hoses and better clamps... try searching for that.
