New to M3s... Question about engine overhaul/replacements...

Hi, everyone! I'm new here, but figured this would be the best place to start some research.

I've got an opportunity to pick up an E36 ('98) at a really good price. This would be a daily driver for me. The car is in great shape... complete new suspension, motor is still strong, interior and exterior good. Biggest drawback is mileage (at 120K+). It's been checked top to bottom by a good friend whose shop specializes in high end Euro imports.

I don't think I will need it anytime soon, but when it becomes necessary (or when I decide to build up the motor), what options do I have for rebuilding or replacing it. I mean, is it easier for me to rebuild what's there or do I have crate motor options?

I don't anticipate going FI with the car since it will be my daily driver and I already have a SC-ed 350Z, but I may do some NA mods like cams, chip, exhaust, etc.

Thanks in advance for any info!

I really wouldn't worry about the mileage too much. These motors last a long time. If you do ever need a new motor, you can pick one up for about 6 grand

As stated above you shouldnt run into any problems in the near future with a 120k mile engine. In fact someone on bimmerforms has a 95 with 262k miles with only a little bit of work required at 200k I believe he said.

A new engine would cost $5600 from www.turnermotorsports.com

I would go with a built motor by either Chuck Stickley ( www.cssmotorsports.com or Pete McHenry (dont have his URL)

Whatever you do, DO NOT get your engine from Bavarian Auto Exchange!! :fuming:

I got an engine with the performance upgrade and within 1k miles I had a timing chain cover oil leak. They overtorqued the bolts on the build-up and tore the seal. It cost me over $1600 to repair. The head and the oil pan had to come off because the cover is sealed between the two.

BAE gave me a mere $500 because they said I didn't have to take off the head and oil pan. That's some shade tree BS!. If you want it done right, the head and pan need to come off or you're asking for trouble.

Then, within another month, I had a rear main seal leak. Another $500 later, I tried to get some funds from BAE and they completely ignored me.

Their customer service s*cks. They never answer the phone and you get a bagload of BS :bs: when you do get to actually talk to someone.
