    Big Problem with motor/ valves!!

1996 m3. Two nights ago I was racing a 240sx turbo for about 30 minutes straight all on highways. I top ended the car at 145mph twice and held it there for the most 5 secs. I did push the car hard for 30 minutes. The next day I started the car and heard valve tapping. I checked the oil it was on the mark. I do use synthetic oil. The car has 125,000 miles on it but always ran fine. By the way its not the vanos Im familiar with that sound. Did I do something thats going to cost an arm and a leg to repair. Im supprised the car acted that way considering I always took care of the car. Any info would be great. Thanks in advance.

i think your hearing the hydrolic lifters ticking, it happens to alot of people after an Auto-x, maybe they can chime in. i highly doubt its your valves, is the car acting weird other than sound?

Yes. In my experience, every E36 M3 that "comes down" from being run hard makes this ticking noise. When you started it, did you let the car run for a few minutes? Start the car, don't let it warm up for too long before driving it, and watch the tick go away after one or two miles. Every M3 that I have seen at both the Autocross and track make this noise after being run hard. If the car is garaged, the tick is especially loud.

If the noise prevails, shut the car off, check the oil again, and overfill it by one quart. This is an old trick (well...since 1995 )
