would anyone replace their clutch at 50k?

I'm waiting for the dealership to get a new tranny to take care of the 5th gear cold start. Should I replace the clutch disc & pressure plate while they replace the tranny? I would only be charged cost of parts and 1hr labor. My current clutch only has 50k miles and it feels strong. I guess I would be saving ~$800 in the future but I'm not sure. What do you guys think?

Most clutches are good for 80k+. I have heard of several people getting over 100k to a clutch before.

i drove mine hard and replaced it at around 60k... relaly it was the previous owner.. but have them check it when installing the tranny... they can probably give you a good guess at the life it has left..

I have 132K miles with the original clutch. If it feels strong you should keep it.

80k and going strong w/ original clutch...if you downshift a lot you save your brakes but wear the clutch, and vice-versa if you use the brakes w/ the car in neutral.

If it feels good leave it alone, IMO.

I would seriously think about if they already have the tranny out. Lightweight flywheel and E34 M5 clutch perhaps?

With that said, my clutch has 87,xxx on it and still grips fine.

Honestly, if you're a good driver, your clutch will be good until 130k if you replace now...so I would do it now because I doubt you'll keep the car PAST 130k. I figure that's you're bound to do it eventually, so if you can save yourself the 800 bucks now, do it.

While you're in there, maybe consider throwing in the M5 clutch or something with the money you're saving.

I have 80K on my original clutch with no problems. I expect a pretty high life out of it. On my 92 325i l put over 165K on the original clutch.

When I had my tranny replaced under warranty for the 5th gear issue, my dealership required me change the clutch/plate in order to warranty the new tranny. I only had to pay for the clutch/plate parts and the dealership covered the labor with the installation of the new tranny. Not a bad deal really. I only had about 50K on mine but they told me my clutch was really worn. I don't know if that is true plus I bought the car with 30K miles on it so who knows how the previous owner drove it.

Finally got my car back today from the stealership. They replaced the tranny under cpo ($50) and I had them install a new clutch kit for $97. They wanted to rape me on the cost of parts so I just brought my own ($220 from pacific bmw). The original clutch had a lot of life left. I was able to inspect it before they installed the new one. I ended up deciding to replace it so that I wouldn't have to duplicate the labor later.

I have 107K on the original clutch and it's still solid.

I do have the 5th gear gate stick when it's gets cold out. Is this something I can have repaired or repair it myself when I do have to replace the clutch?

I'm still driving on the original clutch at 105K miles. Bought car at 11K from first owner. No drivetrain noises, but I wonder what kind of shape the rubber flex-disc is in.
