New to the forum. I bought a 99m3 a few months ago and I am considering a few modifications. The car is approaching 50k and I am thinking about buying an exhuast and intake. If I decide to do so, what is the likelyhood I would jeapordize the reliability of the car? Please comment on your own experiences if you have any similar mods. Oh yea if anyone could post threads pertaining to this topic I would appreciate it. By the way. This is an awesome forum.

I just put on Active Autowerks Gen 3 Exhaust and Intake on my 97M3, O MAN, the sound that comes from the car now is so awsome. Its perfect, the tips are slightly bigger and polished so big improvement on looks, and the intake makes the throttle response a lil quicker and a much more throatier sound also. It was easy as cake to put in and its lighter also. Not a huge jump in performance, noticible but nothing huge. I think that the sound alone was deffinately worth it, not too loud, no cabin drone, just a perfect sound ringing from the tips. Deffinately a head turner. AA is what i would recomend.

i just put on the AA track pipes and by now i think they've had time to break in, and HOLY SH!T, it is loud, its a good sounding loud thou, very aggressive, but i cant really feel anything different from my butt-dyno, i plan on taking it back to get dynoed again this week to see what if any hp/trq gains i got from it
you definately have to have someone else drive your car for you to be able to get the full effect from it, inside the car just isnt the same

Well thanks your responses. The consensus seems to be that exhaust and intake upgrades primarily affect the sound/appearance rather than performance. Would anyone mind describing the pros/cons associated with throwing a chip into the equation? I intend to keep this car for a while so from my perspective marginal performance upgrades do not outweigh risk and reliability. And by the way…. I understand you guys are sick and tired discussing **** pertaining to this topic so your insight is greatly appreciated. (Sorry the FAQ section is only so helpful).

Seeing as how you have a 99 m3, you dont have the ability to swap "chips" into the ecu, instead you have the ability to "flash" your ecu which does the same thing as a chip, yet can be removed and installed more easily.
Chip=95 m3 (obd1)
Software Flash=96+ m3 (obd2)
There really arent any downsides to reflashing your ecu, and there only exists one device with which to flash your ecu (makes choosing which software pretty easy. :agree: )
The tool is known as the "Shark Injector" and can be purchased from www.sharked.com
It will raise your rev-limiter from 6500 to 7000 and will remove your top speed limiter. It also provides slightly more aggressive maps for different driving situations and overall livens up the car.
Definantly a worthwhile mod that wont affect reliability, and which is easily installed/removed.
Hope this helps.
