hey I was advised by a car specialist that amsoil is a better grade synthetic oil then mobile one. infact ur supposed to do oil change once every 25000 miles with amsoil versus the avg 6000 with mobile one. any one heard about this....check out there site. they have test results under product info www.amsoil.com? any experience/knowledge?? .....greatly appreciated...

that is true of any car... but, you can always go back if you begin to leak (which you likely wont). Also, synthetics offer a ton of positives... much higher vaporization points (~600F vs. ~350F) being one of the most obvious. 2-5 times longer life without loss of viscosity. They also are resistant to changes in viscosity due to temp changes... which dino is not. Considering this, they will leave a much better layer to protect bearings/other moving engine parts.
Synthetic does not contain any waxes etc. contained in dyno (caused by organic material). Synthetic flows better at cold temps (not an issue where I live).
The only negative that can be said is that since it is more uniform (molecules), and since it has better fluidity, it is more likely to leak through a worn seal or ring...
Still the positives far outweigh the negatives. 5k on synthetic is no sweat, 5k on dino is stretching it. My ///M gets nothing but synthetic (without problems). Forgot to mention that with dino, because of its lower film/sheer strength, it does not coat internal parts well, and upon startup you are putting unnecessary wear on your engine.

i read about a study where the researchers took like 20 new taxi cabs in NY, blueprinted all the engines, put synthetic in half and normal oil in the other. Put somthing like 50k miles on each cab then blueprinted all the engines again and there was no more measurable wear between the synthetic cars and the normal oiled ones
weather that is true, i have no idea, but my car has had syntetic in it since day one so thats what ill prob continue to put in it

Here's a site that explains oils, and also compares different brands and weights of oils.
Make your own judgements, but synthetic oil is superior....as for hurting your engine, having superior lubrication at all operating temperatures, higher ability to maintain viscosity when extremely hot, and lasting longer isn't likely to hurt it too much IMHO.
I'm running synthetic oil, and don't have any problems with leaking.
Anyway, here's the link

AMS is more pricy, but theirs no question its the best out there. To me its worth the extra money, cheep insurance. They say it can go 25000 miles on one change, but I change the filter @5000 instead of 10000 and at 10000 I put new oil in. The oil that comes out is beautiful. Still full of life but theres no reason to test the viscosity the oil on such a performance machine. AMS is #1 in my book.

I put AMS in my V8 SHO with 150k miles on it. I changed the filter every 5k miles and had an oil analysis. I went to 25k with AMS and the analysis still came back without a recommendation to change it. I did and have since done the above 5k filter 10k full change routine. I've had no issues with the Bimmer or Volvo. AMS does the job for me. BTW- I did 24 track days and 15 Autox events and several other less demanding driving events last season.

Here's another vote for Amsoil... I use it in everything I own: M3, R6, Lawnmower LOL. I just got lab work done on the AMS 5W-40 that came out of my M3 after 5000 miles of service, and the TBN came back as good as a "new" oil.. HA! Insoluables in the oil were 1/3 of the recommended max. levels too.
I'm going to stretch it to 7,500 miles this time and change the filter half way. I'm curious to see what the insoluables will read - I'm confident in the oils life for 25k+ miles, it just gets too contaminated by particles that the filter can't pick up. I'm actually looking into a bypass filter option, but then again, I would get bored not changing my oil regularly LOL.
