I've not driven an e46 M3 but I have driven e46 325's and 330's and the steering and feel in my e36 is SO much more atune to the road. I love the feel of the e36 M3

i don't know if you can say E30 is a better car necessarily. the E36 chassis is much much better than the E30's, teh E30 chassis is notorious for being weak. i personally believe E36 M3 is the king of all M3's and will always represent the pinnacle of BMW's success in creating the ultimate handling car for the street, never again will bmw reign supreme like it did those 4 years from 1995-1999. enough said

SuppaBimma I agree. heres 10 cents, my 2 cents is free.
in the 80s BMW motorsport attempted to race the first 3 series chassis, and it tore sh*t up. BMW was surprised that their sub compact cars were so versatile, winning race after race as a rookie. BMW then decided that the 3 series would not only be a high class fuel efficient commuter, but a real driving machine. This made the 3 series popular worldwide, and consumers expected nothing less. To keep this big market, BMW dedicated their compact class to being high performance vehicles with commercial drivability.
to show its sporty personality the E36 evolved from the E30 by taking the wedge shape popular with sports cars in the 80s. The front McPherson suspension was kept and the rear suspension changed to a multilink z axle. Though the change from e30 to the E36 was quite big, the E46 still uses the E36s basic suspension, steering and braking design.
Looks like the e36 is the perfect blend of old school style with new school performance:
"the E36 replacement for the E30 was the first clear and obvious break with the proportions and styling details established way back with the 2002 and was an all-new machine in almost every way."
