    SMGI issue

Recently my m3 EVO had experieced a oil seeping thru the SMG unit. The oil was found located below the accutator. Any one has any idea on how to get it fixed and what's the potential causes for the oil to seep out?

    Pls advise.

                I have a 98 SMG1 euro EVO

If you have a leak below the accumulator (black dome) then the diaphagm inside it is holed .... you may well experience a delay in pressurizing it when you start the car in that car wont start until pressure has reached 81psi.

... you may well need another accumulator (£113) 5 mins to fit.

I used to drive an Euro 98 Schwartz ...

Don`t let the oil down. Remember always to fill it up with cold car. Do not over fill.

You also will see a bleed screw fill it up with oil, bleed the system, then start your engine. Should be OK until you have your leak solved.

I posted here about an manual conversion on SMG 1. If you can, go for it.

I had some problems with my differential too. has to be changed.

                  Keep us updated.

                  cheers

                    Hey.

i'm not too sure about the oil leaking from the actuator. does it drive/change gear normally or is it normal??

i had a prob with mine when i 1st had it, i used to cluknk into gear and even sometimes stall. anyway BMW had it for 3 weeks and had to put a new hydro unit in it - which came to over £2k.....hope this isnt your problem......

Thanks all. I guess if it there's a problem with the Hydro unit, my car would not be able to shift at all. So I assumed M3 Brasil is right, as after I fill it up with OIL, it is going fine again. However, I am not too sure about the boosting of pressure before car start. The BUZZ sound i heard when I slot my key in the car during morning, should be coming from the accuater where the pressure start to build up, but it will disappear in about 10-15 second, which is normal as described by other SMG 1 user.

Question for RAWM3EVO: other then the faulty diaphragm u described, would that be more issue that I needed to pay attention to? Is it easy to take off and replace the whole actuator? As I also heard some ppl say the whole SMG pump that needs to be replaced, when it is needed to? Thanks for your advise again.

well id go for the cheaper option first .... I was not loosing much oil but I was getting fed up waiting for upto 20seconds before I could start the car.

may be worth getting BMW to check to see if you have any fault codes stored , might give you a clue .....

if i remember to change the dome (acctuator) ... pull smg fuse/relay and put gar in gear/out gear until it does not change .... then remove dome ...put new on on .. if you but a TIS cd of ebay it tells you how to do it.

There's actually a plastic box that is located near the dome, what is it?

does it need to be replaced too in my case for the SMG oil leak?

Also after replacing the parts in the SMG unit, does the shifting programm needs to be reset.

When I tried to pick up my M3 last nite, the car remained impossible to engage any gear, and the mechanic tries to release the SMG dome pressure by let go some oil, still didn't do the job. Any one can give me advise on whether the whole SMG unit needs to be replaced or some other cheaper alternative. Tks

I had the same SMG I problem I think in 2002. The unit won't hold pressure. BMW wants to dump the whole hydro unit, accu., pump and all. To me that indicates they have no idea what the problem is. I got frustrated and ended up replacing it with a 6 MT and happy with it since.

If you are not sure if it is the pressure, check the unit with MODIC III at a BMW dealer shop. It will tell you the pressure, real-time.

The plastic box I think is the ROM + some electronic.

If your shop allows it, I would follow RAW's suggestion and replace the cheapest thing first (accumulator?) and go up from there. Good luck.

Thanks NPower. The plastic box is filled with oil I assumed as there's a screw on top of it. The unscrewing of it, will make oil to seep out.

My garage is not a BMW dealer shop, so it's trying to get the computer (from it's own source) to do the diagnosis.

How much u pay for the 6 Speead gear box, and how much work and cost for the job to be done?
