    Head unit question

I just picked up a used 97 328I for my wife. Her car was stolen a few days before xmas,a nd she drove my M for a few weeks. Aparently she took a liking to it as she said maybe you can get a new car, and I'll keep the BMW. Yea right. Anyway I found a very clean 328I with a manual trans, and she has relinquished the M. I've noticed that her head unit is Very dim. Unreadable most of the time and the buttond are completely w/o light. It is the same stock cassette player as the M has. I was wondering if anyone else has had this prob, is it fixable, or should I start looking for a replacement? Oh yea, what's that head unit called??

The head unit is most likely a C33 if it has cassette and weatherband. Very poor audio quality, so I wouldn't spend money fixing it. You can plug in a CD43 for improved sound quality or go aftermarket. I have heard of dim displays before, so maybe it is common. Btter yet, give her your stereo if it is a C33 and tell her it is an M3 radio.

Hmmmmmmm Salty, you're a sneaky one. I had been thinking about upgrading mine to a CD43 and she would be more than happy with my c33. I was just hoping that I could replace an LED or something like that fro the time being.

I can't remember the the exact problem, but it has to do with something comming loose on the inside of the HU which causes it to dim out. In all honesty though, I would upgrade to an aftermarket HU. Theres much better sound to be offered through aftermarkert than with the factory units.
