    Bass w/ Trunk Space

I was wondering if anyone has tried shelf mounting free air subs like maybe twin 8's or something in the rear shelf? or if there is some kind of space efficient sub setup that would give me more of a usable trunk? I know it won't boom as much as my 12's but I want more usable trunk space.. right now things that normally would fit in the trunk.. I have to put in the rear seat.. which on a coupe is kind of inconvenient...

just wondering what you guys have tried or can suggest... models, brands, diagrams, etc would be great.

right now I have 2 JL 12w6's in a box and although it sounds great w/ the box in there.. I have about as much trunk space as a miata...

not a bad idea.. but whether it would sound good remains to be seen.. i through a single 12 in my trunk and it seems i will have plenty of space.. (i custom made the box)

I have (2) 8's in stealth boxes where the factory speakers were located. The amp is mounted in the middle of them, to the top of the trunk. It doesn not compromise any trunk space and sounds very good.

**edit** stelth boxes are common for E36's so any reputable audio dealer will know what they are.

How much of an improvement are the JL stealth boxes over the facory HK subs?

From what I read about them:

          Stealth boxes = Crappy sound.

I find the factory HK subs to be 'okay'. I wouldn't mind a bit deeper bass. I had a 12" in my car at one point but removed it.

I think they sound great, if your an audiophile, 8's just want to the trick. The limited enclosure space contributes to popping at low frequency/high intensity. Everyone thinks my stereo is fantastic...but I don't have a comparison to the factory set up, but theere are cons I've read about

i'm running a single JLAudio 8W7 wired to a 200/1 in a slot ported enclosure. the trunk space is still decent - enough to fit my golf bag and a duffle bag. the frequency response from the setup is great. the 8W7 sounds bigger than it really is.

Believe it or not but I have JBL 6x9s in the rear powered by a 60Wx4 amp and the bass is incredible given that is all that I have. I am just sending the lows to these speakers. Now they do not hit and shake the neighbors house but I wouldn't want that in a M anyway.

I remember being so happy to get a new sound system put in my M after I bought the car. That happiness quickly changed to dissapointment when I couldn't get any bass out of my new system. O.K. I had to back up and check my facts:

Head unit rca outs connected properly: check!

Amplifier working and hooked up to subs correctly: check!

Subwoofers working and connected properly: check!

Awesome bass out put: Ehhh....? :nixweiss:

Because of this, my system had no balance. That was not acceptable to me. I had to find a way to correct that problem. Not to mention the box had all but consumed my available trunk space. :banghead:

A custom car stereo shop that worked primarily on high end cars mentioned the Infinite Baffle approch to me. I liked the idea because it would get the bass directly into the car. I would use the trunk as the enclosure.

I have two 12" Dynaudio Subs attached to the rear deck via mdf custom built shelf. I have a fully reworked rear deck with larger openings (cutout) and it is completely covered with dynamat xtreme to silence rattles. It was hella expensive because of the way our cars are designed. The E36 M3 was not built with bass in mind that's for sure! :chair:

The bass in the trunk actually gets inside the cabin instead of rattling the entire rear portion of the car and working it's way to you. I tried the box route first, and I was very disappointed. It used up the lion's share of my trunk space and it acted like a tomb sealing almost all the bass inside.

The best part about this whole thing... I got my trunk floor space back.

I know this approch is not for everyone.(expensive) I'm just telling you what I did to get great bass out of our cars.

Good luck in tackling this problem. It's not easy.

most of the things I carry are not tall (height) but deep (wide and length/depth) so I wouldn't mind if it took up the top shelf space as long as I can have the bottom trunk space... right now between my CD changer and my sub box w/ 12's.. I have very little usable trunk space...examples of things we would like to put in the trunk but can't because of my current 12's and box are real estate open house signs, art work/posters, occasional electronic purchases (like a receiver or dvd player.. nothing huge and tall), etc... all large but not tall items... so the box in the shelf taking up trunk height isn't a problem.. we just need the floor space/bottom trunk full depth and width for large but mostly flat items...

I read in some book where they used 4" speakers in a 6 x 9 hole.. and the rear of the hole that wasn't filled.. they had 8" subs on each side.. then had a MDF box/chamber separating the 2 (the 4" mid and tweet and the 8" sub) one of these on each side and the rest of the bottom portion of the trunk was usable...

Clevelands setup sounds like what I'm looking for...

basically I want something that still hits since I'm use to 12's.. but doesn't take up all my trunk... right now my system sounds awesome.. just my trunk doesn't have much usable space anymore so when we are attempting to buy stuff or transport stuff we end up using the Accord V6 coupe now.. but there are times I'd rather drive the M...

Bavarian Soundwerks sells a few enclosures you might like.

This one mounts to the rear deck and holds 2 10" subs: click here (http://www.bavariansoundwerks.com/products/description.php/II=344)

This one sits between the shock towers and holds a single 12" or optional single 10" sub: click here (http://www.bavariansoundwerks.com/products/description.php/II=411)

I actually got one of the first 12" enclosures they made. It looks incredible, and the sound is amazing!!! I would HIGHLY recommend this enclosure.

I've got a JL 10 and its mounted on the far left of the trunk in the little crevass. I mounted my amp behind the CD changer. Its not the most booming system in the world but i wasn't goin for that in teh first place. I still have good trunk space, although i fold my seats down for my wakeboards, and my golf clubs.
