    Getting this M3

Hey all, I plan on getting this 98 M very soon. I'm being bothered lots about it becuase of the mileage..Nearing 105K. I took it out, looked it all over, nothing noticable when driving, lots of torque and power/pull all throught the band. I stopped looked at everything...when I reved it up high past 4-5..and higher, I heard slight vibration "marbles" as i've seen on this board. I'm having the owner take it to a dealer to have looked at tommorow. The Dealer told me the run of the mill inspection is around 90; one hour of labor. The more detailed inspecion is alot more and is upwards into the hundreds of dollars. So i guess i'll see what turns up when they look at it tommorow. Any thoughts?? Thanks

Its probably the vanos unit making the noise. I think its fairly expensive to replace.

Look it up on the Kelley Blue Book:

          http://www.kbb.com

It is not worth 14.5K. Maybe 12.5K but if you figure in replacing the Vanos if that is indeed a problem, I would knock another 2K off the offer and tell him to take or leave 10.5K.

My 98 has only 63K miles and is in perfect mechanical condition as is not worth anymore than 17.5K via a private party sell.

nada.com..says 18. So the *light* sound above 5K is the vanos? I'm sure if the dealer heard it they'd spot it, plus wouldnt I have felt it while I was driving it....? Thanks

Well good luck and if you think you are getting a good deal then that is all that really matters but I would never pay that much. Make sure you are looking at private party value and not retail value. That makes a big difference.

The sound that typically indicates a failing Vanos will sound like marbles. (will be noticeable...)

Like mentioned..the car isnt worth what you have offerred the seller. Take a look at KBB and then think it over a little bit.

just have inspected and then get back to us. Don't buy any car without having it inspected.
