    Euro e36 M3 with over 200,000km

I've been looking around for one for a while now and i saw a great 94 e36 m3, Im in South Africa so its euro spec with the 280hp engine. The body and interior are mint but the engine has 209000km on it. Is this too far gone for an m3 or how do the engines last in these cars? He wants R120000 ($20000), I offered ($16700). Also when the engine started it sounded like abit of a tractor but quietened down about a second afterwards. Dodgy valves? Anyways what I wanna know is if there are any know issues with high mileage in these cars and if i am just buying a car that will need to have the engine rebuilt.

    Thanks

The fact that it sounded like a tractor does not concern me... they pretty much all do....

The miles.... a bit much for my tastes

What is the price of one with 100,000KM or less? It all comes down to the cost of ownership over a certain length of time, figuring in the residual value. After you sink a bunch of money in a higher mileage car it will not be worth more. The engine is often the last thing you need to worry about on an older car. it is leaks, electrical, suspension, ac, paintwork, glass . The US 240 HP motor has a good rep for longevity if cared for. I can't comment on the Euro.

Yes like Salty said these motors can go on forever as long as they are looked after

the place where i get mine serviced say they are good for 250,000 miles if cared for enough so mileage really is not really an issue here if the car is in that good condition every where else then it has obviously had a "good" life

key is servicing record, the tractor noise may be the vanos chain rattling a little when cold, which could cause problems cos the vanos unit aint cheep to fix/replace. May be different in Sewth Efrica.
