First off thanks for all the great information and opnions you guys have given i am still really torn on this car however i did make a lil progress. I talked to the salesman again and he said that he was working on contacting the last owner of the M3 to find out if inspection II had been performed or not. I am waitng for him to get back to me so we will see. Another thing i noticed while test driving a different M3 was the there is a service indicator that looks like a bar or something that goes from red to green. The 5 owner car is in the green which i assume is where it should be where as the 99 that i know for sure did not have inspection II was in the red zone. So can it be in the green with the given miles (around 64,000) if inspection II was not performed? Thanks again for all your help guys

The color bar is the service and oil change indicator. It gets reset when you do the service interval and the oil change.

I am not sure about most, but I have the tool and reset my own as I change my own oil.

Just have it inspected and if you want it - buy it. You only live once and you will never regret it once it is yours.

It looks pretty clean. Body panels look even and clean (as far as you can see with the dealer photos), interior looks good. Being a northern car it does not have any pitting on the headlight lenses (which may mean it didn't see many winter roads). It's pretty low mileage for an 8-9 year old car. Even if it has had five owners, none of them drove it very much. Check for the VINs on all the body panels and once again, get it inspected.

I don't know how mechanical you are but a 97 will take a bit of preventative maintenance and general repair if you don't have service records. An Inspection II is WAAAYYYY overpriced for what it is - but BMW (along with every other high-end auto) banks on this if you can't do it or don't have a good private shop. Service departments (every make of car) make serious $$$$ for dealerships.

....... And get them to take off some $$$ for the "aftermarket" intake/filter. This was probably a trade-in so they might have quite a bit of range to move with the price.

      Good luck......

Well the salesman I am dealing with had a day off today but he is supposed to get back to me on Thursday if he was able to talk to the previous owner about inspection II or not. I did bring up the "intake" when i test drove it and the dealer seemed very open to lower offers so i may use that in my final decesion. Now it is just a waiting game i guess, however if any of you guys are in the IL area and know of other nice M3's for sale please let me know! Another thing that is killing me with making an offer is i still need to sell my Audi :banghead:

The dealer called me back and was able to get in touch with the last owner of the car. He said that the car had been serviced recently at a BMW dealer and the service cost $500 but the guy was not sure if it was inspection II or nots. I am going to look at this car again on Monday the 28th again and see if i can get it inspected or something. Any M3 experts in the Chicago area that wanna help a nOOb out and give it a once over? Lemme know, thanks for all the great advice!

Insp. II at the dealer by me runs $800 so I wouldn't think that would be what it was serviced for.
