Go with H&R Race or Sport?...

hey guys, I've been searching here and also other forums but I can't seem to find the answer I'm looking for.

    Here's the situation....

I'm purchasing a set of Breyton Inspiration from a friend...

-- 18x8.5s wrapped in 225/40/18s for the front and

-- 18x9.5s wrapped in 255/35/18s for the rear

Now here's the problem... I've always like the drop of the H&R race springs compared to the Sport. My question is.. Can I still go with the race springs without having any rubbing issues? Or is the only option I have is to go with the Sport springs? I will be rolling my fenders for more clearance and will be installing Koni SA's.

I know this question might sound dumb but I don't really know much about this stuff and what fits with what so I just had to ask.

    Thanks for everyone's time

    Mark

    BTW, I have a 97 M3

I'm guessing that the Breytons are the correct offset for the E36 //M3. in that case - rolling the fenders will definitely help, which I had to do to give my Breytons more clearance in the rears. the Koni SAs are awesome, good choice.

      Thanks for the reply...

As far as the offset....I don't have any info on that so I'll try to find out by tomorrow.

      If it's any help....the rims came of my friend's 96' M3

If I were you between the two I would pick the H&R Race. The reason I say this is because you can always raise the car a bit with spring pads if it is too low....if it is too high however as might be the case with the Sport Springs your are pretty much stuck at that height.

I have my fenders rolled just as a precaution as I could hear some rubbing with passengers in the rear....I have my car on GC coilovers about as low as they go on a 7" spring.

I would think with a 9.5" width on the rear...you will rub on Race springs....rolling the fenders should eliminate any rubbing.

i honestly think races are just too much of a drop and are too stiff for street use.

95RogueM3 ... Thanks for the advice about the spring pads. I'll look into that.

Supabimma ... I haven't really seen an M3 in person that has the Race springs set up. All i've seen are pics. I should really find someone who does so I could check out the look & feel of the car. I have a friend who has H&R Sport/Koni SA set up on his 96 M3. I liked the feel of the car, but wasn't too happy with the drop in the front.

I remember my old integra that had the Tein Super Street Coilovers. I don't know how they compare to the H&R/koni combo (besides the fact that they are height adjustable, of course), but the car felt good in the turns. The stiffness was set close to the max for most of the time.

Keep in mind that you'll live with these springs on a daily basis - the race will beat your kidneys and rub unless you roll fenders which is always dicey...unless you are going to race, don't - sports are plenty...

                    Doing this just for looks?

not just for looks...I'm not even thinking of getting any body kits or anything.

I'm actually thinking of bringing it to the track once in a while. I've heard so much great things about it on the track and that all M3 owners should try it.

A good friend of mine who's into racing is going to Gingerman Raceway (michigan) in April. He keeps asking me to go and try it out. He's got some experience and has taken some classes at Skip Barber.

I might go...just to enjoy the car a little bit more. Maybe learn a few things and better myself as a driver.

IMO, they aren't stiff enough for the drop they provide.

                      Go with sports.

you guys have to remember the springs will compress over time. My sports are starting too look like races after a year or two, so just keep that into consideration, they will take long time to fully compress. FYI

I'm leaning towards the "sports" now .... but thanks for everyone's feedback on this

I was under the impression that springs don't wear. Or at least it's not noticeable.

If that was the case I would think my 7 year old 90K mile stock springs would've made my car look slammed. Especially with blown shocks....

springs can and have been known to sag - or even collapse. I had a set of H&R sports for my 95 convertible, and the rear springs collapsed (weird). replaced them with Eibach sports, hopefully I will get better luck with this set.
