To all who read, I need your advice/opinions. I have a '95 M3. I have gone through (3) O2 sensors in the past (4) years. My mechanic tells me the fault code indicates an O2 issue. I recently had another one installed and after a week, the engine light came on again. I also had a complete tune up one month ago. I am getting horrible gas mileage, and the vehicle idles low. A different forum group told my the vehicle is running rich, which might explain the multiple O2 sensors. Help!

O2 issue or not?

I dont know why you are going thru the 02 sensors as fast as you are. I "can" tell you that having to swap out (3) sensors in the relatively short amount of time is off for sure, esp considering that you have the OBC 1 which only has (2) sensors to begin with, most of us have (4) to deal with and they ain't cheap either. I had about 60K miles on mine before replacement was needed.

that's highly unusual...IRRC there's only one O2 sensor on the car, I had one...
if it was rich the code would indicate it, there are many associated with the sensor...
it's probably something else...you can read the codes:
insert key
turn to pos 1
wait 2-3 seconds and then pump the gas pedal 5 times
the ecu light will flash the code
light comes on for 5 sec
off 1/2
then on 2.5
then off 2.5
followed by the code
it's 4 numbers
flash-1 sec-flash-flash-1 sec-flash-flash-1 sec-flash..= 1221
more than one code will be followed by a 2.5 sec pause...then the next...
after complete the light stays off
repeat to read again...cycle key off, on etc.
1000 is clear
to erase read 1000, ie, after reading codes and light goes out, then hold pedal down for 10 sec +
read again, should get 1444, no faults stored
post the codes and I'll give them to you (+ my 2 cents worth...lol)
my prelim guess...vacumm leak...

Wow, I completely forgot about that trick. That only applies to OBD1 correct?

Thanks Art. My mechanic told me there are no vacuum leaks. As far as the codes, are you referring to reading the flashing light sequence on the center consol?

Soory, but could you please explain in a bit more detail starting from "1000 is clear?" Thanks again.

no, the check engine light (cel) on the instrument cluster will flash the code...
read the code as described, should be 1221, or something similar...
one code is for O2 rich/lean, this is not a bad sensor, there are other problems...those sensors are good for 50 to 100k miles....
after reading out all the codes, it will flash once and go out for >5 seconds, this 1000...then the cycle repeats...when you get to the long pause, hold the pedal down for >10 seconds, this should clear the memory, read the codes again, you should get 1444, no codes stored...you should have no cel light next time you start the car...
