M3 heated seats and tail light problems

I have read everything I can about the heated seats problem. I have found 3 known issues

    1. Switch doesn't work

    2. Wiring or fuse problem

    3. Heating elements are bad

Here is what is going on with mine. The switch works fine. The passenger seat works fine. I looked at the fuses and they all look fine, but if anyone has a fuse diagram(1997 M3) that they could send me it would be helpful seeing as I can't figure out what fuse is where.

I just checked the wiring and there are 3 wire connector to the seat. There are two small ones and one big one with two plugs in it. I used a omhmeter and checked the big one and it is getting voltage, but I don't know if that is the right one. I think if it is getting voltage then the heating element in the seat is shot. I have two pictures of the wiring harness and wondering if anyone can tell which one is the heated seat wires.

Second problem is I am getting a brake light error on the computer. It only comes on from time to time and as soon as I shut the car off it goes away. Here is a pic of the tail lights with the headlights off. Are all the correct lights coming on with the head lights off?

If the Brake Lights working fine but you're still getting that displaying in your dash check your fuses.

I got the "Check Brake Lights" warning this morning all I did was check my fuses and sure enough one of them had burnt out.

    Start there!

The heater elements are very fragile and prone to breaking. Something like a knee or blunt object will destroy it pretty quickly. I think the element is about 90 bucks and can be DIY replaced (PITA) or repaired.

Let us know how you fix it! My driver side heater element is bad too.

I found universal ones for 70. I wonder if this will work?

None of your brake fueses are out.. or the light's wouldnt work.

Remove the light bulbs and scrape off the built up crossion on the contact of the headlamp houseing, the crossion can mess with the resistance readings and trick the car into thinking a light is out. Also, old lightbulbs can cause the warning. Had that issue with mine, replaced all three at once and it went away.

Heated seats: Good bet the element is dead, they fail all the time. How many miles are on the car?

Good thing spring is coming. I won't care in three weeks when it is 60 degrees out. I wonder how hard it is to get the element out of the seat? They are manual heated vaders.

You have to remove the lower pad, which is held in by clips. You grab the back of the lower pad and pull up until the cilps break. (They are one time use things).

Then you have to undo the leather and pull it back.

It's pretty annoying, and if you're not careful, you can rip actual padding of the seat bottom.
