    Turbo vs. Supercharger

I want to get some sort of forced induction. I know that a supercharger would be cheaper, but you can't get as much hp out of it and i heard that it's not too great for your engine. And as for a turbo it's increadably expensive, but you get great power gains out of it and i heard it's a good thing for your car. I found some different types of fi, if you guys could give me your opinions on the different kits and let me know if you know of any that i'm missing. And let me know what you would go with, supercharger or turbo charger.

1.) Theres http://www.techniquetuning.com/e36obd2turbo.htm which is only $6800 for the turbo they also have a sc but it's not priced

2.) Then http://www.racemarque.com/shop/asp/prodtype.asp?prodtype=10&ph=&keywords=&recor=&Sear chFor=&PT_ID= which has 2 different superchargers one that's $5k that puts out 357HP and the Stage 2 costs $6500 and puts out 411HP!

3.) Then http://eurosporthighperformance.com/supercharger.html which doesn't have a price yet but puts out 343HP

    4.) There's http://activeautowerke.com/Supercharged/E36-M3supercharger.cfm which is $5700 and puts out 355HP

    5.) http://activeautowerke.com/turbo/OBD2-E36Turbo.asp which is $8700 and puts out 380HP

6.) Last http://activeautowerke.com/turbo/OBD2-E36M3-STG2-Turbo.asp costs $10900 :banghead: but puts out 450HP

All of these HP numbers are at the crank i'm pretty sure

Check out the e36 FAQ for my thoughts on all of the kits you have listed.

    Some thoughts:

A supercharger is actually better for your engine than a Turbo is because it only makes its peak boost at max rpms (this is because it is run off your crank so it makes peak boost when the crank is spinning fastest). However, a Turbo can make peak boost as early as 3200rpms depending on the turbine housing and can hold that to redline or close to it...this in turn translates to more strain on the motor as it is exerting boost over a much longer time period in every gear.

Option 1 is the best. (350rwhp)

Option 2 is the worst (or atleast most expensive as you would need to get custom tuning for it to be even remotely safe). (stage1=300rwhp and stage 2= 335rwhp)

Option 3 is going to be a ballpark of $7k and the 343 is to the wheels...(super impressive)

Option 4 is for sale for cheaper through their vendors..something like $5200 now...but will make a max of roughly 285rwhp (according to their figures of 355 it should make ~292rwhp...though almost no one sees that much power on the dyno...and for some reason most owners say the car doesnt feel fast like 290rwhp should....that 290 is peak, you have to remember)

Option 5 is a more expensive version of option 1 which puts out less hp for more money. (310rwhp)

Option 6 is nice but you would be much better off waiting for the Technique Tuning stage 2 kit due out shortly which should greatly outperform the AA stage 2 kit for less money. The AA stage 2 only produces 40rwhp more than the TT stage 1 kit which costs $4k less. (390rwhp)

I really like the 60-1 HIFI used in the TT stage 1 kit..its a really well chosen kit and when you look at the dyno charts they just look so perfect..full boost before 3500rpms..and a sweet AFR line.

Any more questions feel free to ask.

a Dinan Supercharger with a VORTECH blower is the ONLY way to go. I'd NEVER buy anything from AA or RMS.

Not that I'm a Dado worshipper, but if you read up on his car AA's labor was shoddy at best. They didn't weld part of his car and actually could've killed him. Their customer service is poor at best, try to call AA and get someone on the phone for something other then sales.

As for RMS, well blown up M3's taking people's money and not doing the work, and taking parts off people's cars should be reason enough.

dont get a centrifugal force blower. in my book there are only 2 options TT turbo kit or eurosport twin screw SC.

well the twin screw isnt out yet and has been delayed for well over a year, i dont see it coming anytime soon.

Nick G (TT turbo) has awesome service, hes on the boards, ive only heard positives about his kit from all the owners, and it makes huge power.

            go with technique tuning.

yea..... and if dado is having a problem, then AA is definitely ****, huh?? and as if dado doesnt almost kill himself whenver he enters any rally type event....

AA customer service is great. i got my AA DSB used and Karl & Mike helped me out with everything i needed and with any questions i had. they went above and beyond the service i have received from other companies........

I was hoping someone would answer the poster's original questions? I, too, would love to hear about longevity of the engine with turbo vs super.

And how do the driving impressions of super/turbo cars compare? Does the weird delivery of turbo make it really hard to drive?

I find it encouraging to see the Dado car in autoX and drifting events, both which require a manageable power delivery.
