Yes, the fan should be removed to make some more space. The water pump is fine where it is, but might be a good idea to replace as well becuzzz its cheap. Also if you have a plastic thermostat housing, replace it with a metal one.

After you remove the fan its right in front of you, where the upper rad hose attaches to the motor, that lima bean shaped cover is the stat housing.. just remove that.

The fan will get in the way so it is best to remove it. (it is reverse threaded too so righty loosy)

The Tstat housing is easy to find. Follow the upper radiator hose to the engine block to the black plastic or if you are lucky silver aluminum housing. There are several bolts holding it on (I want to say 4 but if memory serves me right there is one that is a little out of the way) the T-stat will practically fall out after you get the housing off.

It is best to go ahead and scrap the plastic housing and get the metal one, the plastic WILL fail at some point.

While you are elbow deep in the cooling system, it wouldn't be a bad idea to replace the water pump as well. There are 4 nuts holding the pump to the block. remove these. On each side of the pump is another hole. take a 10mm (I think) bolt and screw it into these holes. Tighten them and it will leverage the old pump out. Once out, replace it with a new, metal impeller pump. It should slide in with just a little force. Tighten the nuts to seat it to the block (the O-ring on the pump sometimes makes it a little difficult to get in)

Make sure you have the orange gasket on the T-stat housing, otherwise you will have a mess.
