This is becoming a major problem and no dealer seems to know what is wrong. At random times, after either a long distance trip with the cruise control on or at a stop light when the clutch is in and the car is in gear for an extended period, the speedo with pin itself at 0 mph when I pull away from the light. Along with the speedo not working, the instant mpg will stop functioning as well as the cruise control. Then just as suddenly as the problem starts, the guages will come back alive. Has anybody ever heard of this problem? It is becoming an issue. PLEASE HELP!!!

This probably isn't it, but BMW's gauges get stuck at times when they get really hot.
I am surprized a dealer can't figure this out because if the speedo get's stuck, it'll throw errors into the fault memory of the insturment cluster than can then be read out.
Your cluster may be failing, could be a loose wire, a bad harness, a couple dying or broken sensors. Quite a bit of things. -
it happened to me once, the speedo stayed at 0 from my san diego to LA drive. i turned off the car and started it an hour later and it worked. i dunno. it could just be stuck, but then again BMWs are known for their electrical problems. try disconnecting/reconnecting the battery. If that fails its gotta be the eelectrical components.
not to insult the bmw mechanics in your area, but they should work at jiffy lube. I have yet to see a qualified bmw mechanic who couldnt fix any of my problems. its gotta be the California love!Comment

I had exactly the same problem, but in my '00 523i. It all started when the ABS light came on. I ignored it since i never really drove fast in that car. After a few weeks, the speedo and the mpg gauge stopped working (with the ABS light on). But when the car has cooled down, all of them work. Until eventually, they just dont work anymore (speedo and mpg). I took the car into a BMW shop and they replaced the ABS control module (here it costs about $900)....problem solved. According to the bmw mechanic, that module controlled the speedo and mpg gauge as well.Comment

I've had this happen before. I take the sensor out of the differential and wipe any fine metal shavings off and it works fine after I install it again.Comment

this is common on an e30, the whole cluster ultimately fails... i would try cleaning the sensor though.

it's a eurospec. it has a 2.5litre engine (not a 2.3). they only sell those in europe & asia. i dont know why they didnt sell them in the US though.Comment
