Need help on this trade for a 98 M3

I have an '03 Lexus IS300 and tried to move into a 98 M3 tonight, but I couldn't put a deal together with the dealer.

As I said, it's a '98 black with gray leather. 49k miles, 5-speed, sunroof, spoiler, heated seats, etc. Has some suspension work done to it, but I'm not sure what exactly. Regardless, it drives very nice. Single owner who is dealership client - took very good care of it and obviously didn't drive it too much.

Dealer listed it for $21,9xx and I could only get him down to $19,600 with $21,000 for my car... netting me $1,500 back in my pocket. Is that a fair price? I feel like it's a bit high, but I'm not too familiar with this market. I think $21k for my car is a good price (38k miles, 5 spd, black/black loaded except navi).

    Help please! Thanks.

A 98 M3 would smoke your 03 IS300, but $19,600 is a high price for a car that's 8 years old now. I'm selling mine for $14000 on private party and have a hard time making a deal.

Yeah I drove it and had a big smile on my face. I'm a sucker for BMW's and have always loved the M3s. I am glad to hear that $19,600 is too high and that I didn't walk away from a great deal. $14k and having a hard time? What year and how many miles? Maybe I can help you have an easier time

14 is way too low IMO, and 19,600 is way to high. though if this is a bmw dealer willing to offer a warranty i don;t think its unreasonable. basically few dealers will make a deal where writing a check is involved, yur lucky you found one.. you can look it is like yur car is worth 20, the bmw is worth 18,600.. still high, but that probably how the numbers wil work out. Or just say hey, my car for a bmw and 1500.. that to me sounds decent.

GCompete you state you have yours for 14K and you are having a hard time are you kidding me. Come on you cant tell me your car depreciated that much in 8 years. I have the sticker for my car and it was 48,xxx new you are telling me 8 years later i am lucky to get 14K or will have a hard time getting that I wont even sell it for that little which i have been offered more and i turned them down. Thats crazy. That is telling me a BMW is not a good investment. I know that is untrue. I think that price is good plus you are getting money from the dealer, they hate to do that. trust me i worked with a few dealerships while in college and if they heard something like that it was an automatic NO deal, thanks but no thanks.

Listen this is my 2 cents I have noticed that people post up selling there car for lower then the value becasue they need the money or they dont care they just want to get rid of it and dont need the money but as of me who is just trying to sell and see if I get a good offer and maybe move on and get something better that is my ideas but if not i will just have to make sure i make more time to drive it and enjoy it more.

If you have the time and patience, offer him $17.5K without a trade. Then sell your car privately for more than $21K.

I am thinking about doing this. Based on my research, I think I can get between $22k and $23k for my IS. I am not sure if they'd do $17.5k even w/o a trade as that's still $4,500 off sticker. Blue book retail on the car is about $19,500. I think $18,500 would be fair? I am not in a position to afford two car payments right now (three including my wife) and am concerned about buying another car without having mine sold first. But if I wait until mine is sold, the M3 will probably be gone and then I'm screwed.

I don't know how willing they'd be to work with me to overcome that timing issue. If I gave them a non-refundable $500 deposit, maybe they'll hold it for me until my car sells or for 30 days, whichever comes first.

Also, I'd probably keep this car for two years, at which point I'd sell and get into something a little larger. What do you think resale will be like on this car in two years assuming I keep the miles down? I'm thinking my IS will really take a hit once the new body style rolls out this fall. It might be a good move to get out now while I can still get a good deal... Thoughts?

Another way to think about your situation is this:

Make the trade and not pay sales tax due to the credit you'll get, otherwise deal with the paying full sales tax on the m3 and then the hassle of selling the lexus in your spare time...and still paying on the note if it's not paid for.

In Missouri I can sell my car and roll into a new car and only pay sales tax on the incremental difference. If that weren't the case I wouldn't even consider it, but that's what my friend told me and he works at a BMW dealership.

you'd pay sales tax on the diff.

For awhile I was considering either an IS300 or 330i as an alternative to an older M3. I need a four door...so a newer one is outta the question. Here's a link with info about a 98 M3 four door in Texas for a little over $17. http://www.cartersahadi.com/m3.htm

Not sure if it's still available...been a couple of weeks.

Thanks. I e-mailed him and will see what he has to say. A 4-door would be nice, but I'm hesitant to purchase sight unseen and then pay for shipping and deal with selling my car.

I just talked to the dealer again and they apparently have no problem cutting me a check, probably becuase they'll turn a nice profit on my IS!

So what's the minimum cash back you guys would do the trade for? $1,500? $2,500? $4,000?

I just talked to him and he offered $2,200. I can probably squeak to $2,500 if I'll sign today. That's a pretty good deal?

Can anyone help me make sense of this car's detailed vehicle history and ownership? I was told by the dealer that it was a single owner...

Any way to find out more about the minor accident reported? Any other red flags on this thing?
