Yep you heard right! I was just welcomed to the crowd of dumb a""es that money shifted. Now the only question is.....How Much do I Owe Ya ? Listen up everyone, I didn't think it would happen to me just like everyone else thought it wouldn't happen to them. For a little while I was using the back hand shifting technique....... then I changed back because I thought it was too uncomfortable. Well guess what, I'm more uncomfortable with my Wedding Savings account being wiped out when the wedding is in less than a year. I'm not sure of the actual damage yet, won't find out until monday afternoon but I can tell you three cylinders aren't firing and my car won't hold an idel. I'm hoping best case scenario of a blown head gasket and bent valves ( hopefully not broken ) because I had to drive my car about 2 miles to the shop. I didn't think a tow truck could get under my car. Don't be an a** like me, just shut up and backhand shift! On a happier side not if I need valves would it be beneficial to get oversized ones even though I have the stock cams?

The problem people are having is blowing up their engines due to an over-rev condition caused by an inadvertent downshift into too low a gear.. the inertia of the car causes the engine to over-rev due to the incorrect gear ratio for the road speed. Whew.. long explaination, but basically people blow up their engines REAL GOOD.
This is partly driver error (frequently seems to happen during road-racing, sometimes on the track..) and partly crappy design of the shift mechanism by BMW (where it is tied at one end to a movable point, on the transmission, and at the other end on a fixed point on the body. Transmission movement causes the pattern to change.)
So many people did it when the cars were new that BMW embedded a max-RPM counter in the LCM on the car..
The rev limiter will not prevent this since it can only control the engines response to driver input such as throttle. It cannot prevent a physically forced over-rev which is what happens in the "money shift"..
The tachnique on UUC is good, and it's also good to replace ALL the shifter bushings if there is noticeable play in the shifter... a sloppy shifter combined with some road-racing is a sure way to do a money shift.

The problem is during spirited driving, it can be easy to accidentally mis-shift on a down shift. For example, let's say you're in 5th. You want to downshift to 4th. You miss the gate and shift into 2nd. Now your engine over-revs. Now you have a big repair bill.
UUC has a good write-up on a shifting technique that will limit the possibility of mis-shifts:

gregsalpine - Sorry to hear about your car. Did you have TM/TMEs?
wellcraft - money shifting is when you mean to put in 4th and it goes into 2nd over revving the engine.
I tried backhand shifting and it felt uber uncomfortable.
A 3-4 shift is a straight back shift so my technique to reduce/eliminate any kind of side movement is:
1. plant my elbow on the armrest
2. wrist straight, palm down
3. 3 middle fingers on the shift knob
4. flick my wrist towards the back
IMO, I find this to be the best way to shift a 3-4 since it reduces the number of pivot points (wrist, elbows, shoulders) that move, which decreases the amount of possible variances in the shift. This works well for me especially when I'm shifting during a turn or when the car has some sideway g's - gives me a fixed point while my body is rolling with the inertia.
I use the same technique for a 5-4 and 5-3 shift. In the 5-3, I flick my wrist half way back (pulling the shift knob with the 3 middle fingers) then bump it forward with my heel of my wrist.
I'm curious who else does this or who else uses another technique besides backhanding it... always looking for ways to improve my driving.

Yeah it sucks, I don't have TME's , don't know if it would have helped. I think I'll be scared to drive when I finally get her back ( if I get her back ) just because it seemed very easy to do. Any other SH*T car would have gave you a little grinding noise and wouldn't even let you get into that low of a gear. Oh well.

It is actually on an attempted upshift that most people do this on these cars. I think the most common is redlining in 3rd and then hitting 2nd instead of 4th.

(V)3 - In my normal daily driving I do similar, here's my technique:
1-2 hold shifter like a soda, pull slight left and back
2-3 heel of hand pushing at the 6:30-7:00 position
3-4 modified backhand or the 3 finger but my fingers are at 11 and not 12
4-5 heel while holding shifter, positioned at 8 and push up and over.
