Would they have taken a standard cast and bored it out? (thus leaving the smaller numbers on the block)
Edit: I'll have my car on stands later this week. I'll make sure to check the block markings when I do, just for reference.

This engine has about 100,000 miles i was told. Not sure why he would scrape off the vin tag. The guy owns a dealership and has a lot of random BMW parts that he has salvaged from auction cars he bought to part out.
I pulled an S52 from my friends car with ~115k mi and the VIN tag was perfectly intact. I took care in making sure it stayed there so when I sold the motor I had proof it was an M3 motor. That thing may have more than 100k!
Uhh, it has a flywheel for a torque converter. No auto M3's in 95.

well, that's pretty lame. I thought I was sitting on 3 grand. The guy traded it to me for my e46 M3 OEM 18" rims so, the deal seemed too good to be true. Either way I suppose it's worth at least as much as the rims.
That sucks, he told you it was from an M3. I'd go and have a "talk" with him. Is the M50 the 2.8 non M motor?

the vanos cover is painted
the s52s have the black plastic
This is an M50/S50, not an S52. The vanos cover is not painted....

Actually, there were auto M3's in 95. 95 was the only year they made auto M3 coupes. Then there were auto sedans in 97, sedans and verts in 98, and verts in 99.

bleh you're right. :lolhit:
and no, the m50 is not 2.8L, it's 2.5 in the US. The 2.8l is an M52.

Yeah, this is very lame. that guy is obviously either dishonest or totally stupid. Although he did give me enough other random parts that the whole deal is probably worth as much as my rims. So, whatever. It's just going to be a lot harder to sell this stupid engine than an M3 engine would have been.
