I've got an Ireland Engineering catback on my car right now and it's a little loud for my taste. It sound about the same as the UUC system U but a little quieter. I still have the stock exhaust but really don't want to put it back on, it's too fat and heavy. When i want to drive fast i don't want my wife to notice :argue: :shifty:. Right now every time i hit the gas it's like i'm announcing to the world that i'm about to speed. What i'm looking for is something really subtle, i don't care if it isn't any louder than stock but i still want the weight savings.

Quiet exhaust options?

I'd go with a Stromung exhaust. It is close to stock and from the exhausts I've heard on our cars is the quietest aftermarket (but i haven't heard them all in person). Plus it only weighs 24lbs, which if I remember correctly is on the lighter side when it comes to exhausts for our car.
I'm planning on getting an exhaust in a month or so and thats the one I'm going to get. Plus they have good customer service and overall are some cool guys to talk to on the phone.
Good luck with the choice!

another vote for the Gen III on stock headers/stock midpipes...
essentially completely stock sounding at idle, and moderate gas input. Once you want to stomp on it, it does wake up though

The Strömung isn't quiet. But I do find the sound somewhat refined now that I've abandoned the whole OEM NVH criterion that once weighed on me heavily. Interestingly enough--as I mentioned in my "shorty" headers thread--the Strömung became even smoother ("quieter?") once the headers were installed.
If you can put up with a bit more noise, I'd say the Strömung is one of the premier exhausts for this car. It's inexpensive ($500-something), looks great, is one of the lightest on the market, fitment is dead on, and (despite the foreign-sounding moniker) it's manufactured here in the good ol' USA.
Cons (at least in your case) include a bit more aggressive tone and the tips, while "stainless," do rust. The rust is easy to remove with metal polish but it's kind of a bummer. But hey...at a third of the cost of the SuperSprint "street" (i.e., not "race") version--which is widely regarded as the sophisticated "gentleman's aftermarket exhaust" for the E36 M3--the Stömung comes as close to the "ideal" as you're going to find.
