Improving crank case ventilation / catch tank

    Hi,

Does any one of you do race driving on the track and use euro model m3 for it?

Have you experienced smoke coming out of your tail pipes when cornering hard?

That would indicate that excessive amount of oil fumes is coming from crank case ventilation system to the airbox and in to the engine. One solution is to install an oil catch tank.

Have you installed a catch tank, if yes, how have you rerouted the breather pipes to the catch tank?

pretty simple, just take out the CCV, and install a hose from the valve cover breather, to a catch can. Nothing crazy

      What's the CCV? (I doubt I have this since mine's OBD1)

In any case, you need to have vacuum on the can, and it's got to be mounted in a cool place to work properly. Without vacuum, it won't work the way it's designed to.

The best can I've found to date is the mckinney. Great design and pretty compact as well.

Sounds like you have too much oil in your engine and the excess is going into the combustion chamber.

Well, restrictor did not help. Still too much oil is found in the plenum (intake box). This is only a problem when driving on the track.

This is pain in the ass problem, since it practically makes the car undriveable.

Have you had this problem, if yes, what have you done to fix it???

The ventilation exit is in stupid place in valve cover and when cornering hard, oil surges to the ventilation exit and from there to the separator and plenum...

are you using an aftermarket plenum?

are you sure you got the correct restrictor, and installed it in correct place, you have to remove 2 cam bearing studs, and push it right in, so it fits between the 2 cams, with the 1.5mm hole facing down, if this is all done right, it will almost entirely eliminate the problem, with just a slight puff on tracks that you spend a LONG time over 7000rpm, I have a catch can in series to get rid of the last bit, hose that is supposed to go from cyclone seperator to underside of plenum now goes from cyclone seperator to catch can, and another hose from catch can to plenum. there is also a small hose from the bottom of the catch can teed into drain hose from bottom of cyclone seperator to sump

Crazy I have never heard about this.

How is consumption before and after this fix on an otherwise healthy engine (good separator, correct oil)? Big difference?

Mine used to put away 0-40 at like 1/2qt per 1k miles or so it seemed. About half of that now with 10-40, or maybe slightly better I stopped paying attention.

this only applies to euro S50B30 engines running for extended periods above 7000rpm on race tracks

You can run above 7k rpm on a US motor, and not on a racetrack fwiw, but sounds like there's some other reason it applies only to euros...?

No, he is saying it only applies to tracked euro motors, not WHY it only applies to tracked euros.

That actually looks like it is venting to atm in the engine bay w/ no vac on the crank case. Pretty w/ the AN hose and all dat der, but in terms of functionality, looks like a pretty lame set-up.
