For all of you NA guys out there with Shrick cams, what mileage do you get cruising on the freeway at 65-75 MPH? When I replace my VANOS I have been considering cams. :shiftdriv

Shrick Cams Gas Mileage - Freeway

I was surprised at the mileage increase since I was expecting a big drop.
Driving a '96 M3.
I just got my car back yesterday and the freeway mileage on cruse control is close to 40 mpg. This was at 70-73 mph. I am at 175 miles on my first tank and not to 1/2 yet. My range still shows 325 to go. That is on a combination street and freeway. The computer is telling me 500 miles on a tank with normal driving. My combined is 32 mpg so far, was 22, and don't worry I have put the peddle down a couple of times. When you use the peddle the computer shows a big drop and fast.
I did the CAI, bigger intake, cams, injectors, chip, vanos, water pump and had some head work done.
I gotta tell you it sure feels and sounds good. I have a date at Laguna late this month. Can't wait to climb the hill to the cork screw accelerating for a change after the shift to 4th.

Interesting. Lamoe, are you seeing these gains on your obc? 24 lb injectors makes range/mpg useless :/ Do people see these mileage increases w a m50 manifold or just the schrick?
175 on less than a half tank is pretty decent and a meaningful number even if he *hasn't* re-calibrated the OBC...

you seriously believe you're getting 40mpg?
OBC calculates mileage based on two things
-distance traveled (duh)
-injector pulse (open time), which is calibrated for 21.5lb/hr injectors
a bigger injector (like yours, which is what? 24lb/hr?) will stay open for less time, thus making the OBC show that the car is using less fuel
you have to calculate the mileage yourself based on how much fuel you're actually using

my OBC says that im getting 42mpg :shifty:
yeah 24lb/hr injectors make that function unless.

Or you could re-calibrate the OBC... :shifty:

The same motor would consume the same fuel with 21 or 42 lb injectors. VE mods like intake, exhaust and cams may actually improve economy, making the engine more efficient and requiring less throttle input to create the horsepower necessary to move the car at 70 mph in a certain gear. That horsepower requirement does not change.
More radical mods can alter the power band, perhaps making the engine more efficient on the top end and less efficient on the bottom end. With such mods, more throttle input may be required to run the car at 70 mph in a particular gear.
Although sometimes you can make the engine more efficient so it produces more rwhp with the same fuel, typically more power requires more fuel. When you access the extra power, expect to pay for it with reduced fuel economy. When you are not accessing it, such as running 70 mph in 5th with "not radical' mods, expect no reduction and possibly even some improvement.
For radical versus non-radical consider the example of Sunbelt versus Shrick cams. The Sunbelts trade some low end power for more top end power. The Shricks seem to sacrifice nothing on the low end and make a bit more top end. With the Sunbelts, you could find yourself having to put your foot down further to maintain 70 mph in 5th, but not with the Shricks.
I ran Shricks for 3-4 years and think they are great, with no tradeoffs except that they add only about 10 rwhp on a naturally aspirated car (maybe 20 rwhp on a supercharged car running 14-15 psi), which works out to $110 per rwhp for the NA car. The Sunbelts will add more like 20 rwhp on the NA car, but there is noticeable low end loss, and dramatic low end loss when combined with the popular M50 intake manifold swap. Read the Eurotuner article on the M3 Sunbelt cam car. You can find it online. You can also find a European Car article on an M3 Shrick cam car.

Not really.
175 miles on ~8 gallons = 21.875 mpg.
I usually see 200+ miles before the needle hits the half tank mark, but then I'll get 350-380 miles on the tank (filling at "empty", which is ~16 gallons). The gauge isn't terribly accurate; I wish people who talk about their car's fuel economy would calculate it by hand.

I only see those numbers on straight highway driving. If I get 300 miles before the light clicks on, I'm doing well.
And I am a hand calculating fool... Every tank I check the numbers against the OBC... :shifty:
