Stupid question, do you own a multimeter? Know how to use it?

If all you are trying to do is find a switched power source, usse the multimeter.

All fuses are hot on one side, load on the other. Pull a fuse, test both sides with the key of and the key on. Soon you will find one of the many that will work.

Yes and yes. I also have a bentley manual, which is a much better solution, of which I did make use of. It tells me what fuses and color wires and such. I just wasn't sure I was reading it correctly, as earlier posts state, and you would have known had you not jumped to conclusions that everyone is less intelligent than you.

The Bentley isn't necessarily a better solution, in fact a lot of times the Bentley is wrong wrt wire colors.

I wasn't jumping to an conclusions, I was asking a dumb question. I know lots of guys that don't own a DMM, and a lot that do own one, but don't know how to use it effectively.

I mean seriously, you first stated that you were looking for an accessory wire. (trigger), You then state you tapped a wire you thought would work, and it didn't. Then you ask for help.

Had you used a DMM, you probably wouldn't be asking this question in the first place. But what do I know...

i think bentley would only be wrong if your looking at the wrong diagram (i.e. year, model, ect.) I tapped a wire that a guide used to power the lighting, but i only need to trigger it. I think it should still work, but it doesnt so im going to try a different one

i think bentley would only be wrong if your looking at the wrong diagram (i.e. year, model, ect.)....You might be looking at the wrong diagram without realizing it or having the chance to. Both the Bentley manual and the BMW ETMs are secondary sources with errors. From what I've seen, if you were to fully wire a car following either, you'd have a car riddled with malfunctions. Trust is good, verification is better.
