    Transmission problem - Help

When I put the car into any gear it won't move. Keep in mind I have an automatic transmission.

When I lift the rear of the car on a jack the wheels spin forward slowly on all of the gears except Park. Reverse and Neutral move forward. If it's on drive for example, the wheels will spin slowly but when given gas they don't spin much faster. Eventually they just stop. And on the ground they don't move at all. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Here is a video. Sorry, it was dark outside.

Sorry bud, they aren't super automatic friendly here but I have one too. My best suggestion would be search other forums. Our trans are mostly GM manufactured or so I have read. Could be a lot of things but I do know that it is a basic auto trans issue and not necessarily specific to BMW. Could be a broken shift cable. Our cars are old and things rust and break. Could be fluid level or solenoid but check easiest first. Good luck though.

My guess: transmission is blown. Have you tried changing fluid?

Doesn't sound like a cable, as he stated it does start the tires moving when placed in gear.

First thing I would check is fluid, but I would guess you already have. Low fluid can cause a lack of hydraulic pressure and cause the car to coast at times, but this would seem to be beyond that. Plus you would see a rather large puddle under the car...

Were there any symptoms leading up to this? Any shifting problems? Slipping? More info might help. I am no slushbox expert, but I know a few guys I could ask.

Good point, at that I would have to think it is a fluid issue or pressure. partially clogged solenoid etc.

Thanks for the replies. I've tried changing the fluid and filling it without any luck. I'm gonna take it somewhere to be fixed.

Remember when you lift only the back wheels and put it in gear, the traction control will take over and wheels will stop turning. I just did the same thing and then I realized what was happening. The auto in your car will be a ZF A5S 310Z.

I just had a transmission guy look mine over when I had the car apart. He didn't have much good to say about how sturdy it was. I think he mentioned something about still being able to read "coca cola" on some of the internal parts. In spite of that and 147,000 miles, he said everything was still in useable shape and he put it back together. If I was you, I wouldn't spend a lot of money on it. Probably best to pick up a used M3 auto, probably easy to find.

I wish I could help, the E36 Automatic Transmissions are somewhat of a mystery on this forum.

I would try Bimmerforums, i think they have all the E36 autos or something. (Seriously)

GM transmission, in an E36, really? I used to own a MY00 328i with SP and that car had the GM transmission. My understanding is that GM supplied the transmission for only the 1999/2000 E46 model years.

Gm supplied quite a few BMW transmissions through the years. Just look at Bavarian recycling for auto trans and you will find many GM's. M3s had ZF autos however.

I would think that GM made them to BMW specs. I doubt that there are any turbo 350 or 400 backing any BMWs!

Spec or not, still GM! :fart:

Back in 1965! My friend was driving his dad's 1965 Chev Impala 283 with a powerglide. He wanted to show off. I still cringe when I write this...He reved the engine up A LOT then dropped it into gear. Just smoked the back tires. Then once he got some speed up, he threw it into neutral again and let the engine rev further then back into gear for more smoking tires. He did this a number of times. His dad drove that car for years after and never had a trans problem.

Also from the comments from my trans expert, the BMW ZF spec trans

isn't very heavy duty so I don't plan to do any neutral drops with the M3.

Actually my son will be getting it and driving across the country to live in the fall. He better not do neutral drops either.
