I've been consuming oil since I bought my car in April. I bought it in Denver and had Bimmerhaus doing a PPI and compression check before I flew in to pick up the car. They said the compression was good across the board (150 I believe, have to check the notes). So I bought it. Drove it about 1200 miles home and had consumed about a quart of oil. The shop in Denver had been using 20w50
Anyways, I installed all the parts from my wrecked chassis (dual pump oil pan, stewart water pump, euro oil filter housing and cooler, etc). Basically all the seals on the engine are new aside from the valve cover gasket and headgasket. The car smokes pretty bad on decel, a white cloud of smoke will roll past the car as I come to a stop on occasion.
I've put 16k miles on the car since April and have done 3 about to do another. I just finally had time to a compression and leak down.
Compression was 185 on all 6 cylinders.
Leakdown was 2% on cylinders 1,2,3,4 and 6. Cylinder 5 had 10% leakdown. I checked it a few times and had a master tech confirm.
I did the smoke test next to see where it was coming from. I pulled the dipstick tube (rings), radiator cap (headgasket), MAF (intake valves) and exhaust tips (exhaust valves). I ran it for half an hour and no smoke appeared anywhere.
From what I have read, smoke on decel is usually valve seals. I have also read that oil smoke is kind of blue, my smoke it pretty white.
Few other notes, on the freeway in 6th gear (3000rpms), the cars oil temp is 120 and water temp is 180. Around town ~under 45mph stop and go, it is usually 160 oil temp and 200 water. My mechanic friend said my oil temp needs to get up to 200 and that may be a reason as to why I am consuming so much oil.
I'm just looking for the answer now as I'd like to resolve this. Everything else on my car is solid and I'm looking at FI so if this engine is not up to the task then it will affect my route.
