How many of you have taken the M on a 500m+ road trip? Any issues along the way?

I never have. I don't travel much at this time in my life. When I retire, I'll be gone all the time, but will be in a more modern car with more comfort.
I've been told to pack some reasonable tools and distilled water. Maybe a small can of gas. Heck, you could pack the trunk full of stuff, but every 150 lbs drops the mileage by 1 mpg.
What trip in particular?

bought a 96 m3 a few years back with 108k on her, the car was located in Atlanta Georga and I live in Rochester NY. I flew down and drove the car home with no issues what so ever. I did check all the fluids and tire pressure like a intelligent individual would. the car had sat for a while and I burnt a quart of oil right off the get go but never burnt a drop ever again, Every time one of my fathers and mine M3s goes away for the winter or sits for a time, they fire right up, burn a quart and then its fine, every s52 or s50 doesnt matter which motor, like clockwork
every M3 we ve owned we have done detailed maintence on and they have been more then reliable on all trips,

Oh yeah, I forgot the "have a clue" recommendations...when I took my first long trip I did all these things (including checking the spare!) but no extraordinary measures like packing my entire toolkit...

I took my old E36 M on a number of long trips without issue. Most notably that I can remember I went State College PA to Tampa to Miami and back... for the Penn State Orange Bowl in '05.
Also moved out to Chicago from PA in my E36 for a summer internship. Had the E36 packaged to the gills including with a bike.
Cooling system is always a major weak point that can go at any time. That's a good one to do maintenance on - god forbid you get stuck in traffic on the highway and it goes. Otherwise normal highway cruising is pretty easy going really.

Took my car form new jersey to my house in Maine and back and the only problem I had was the brake light switch went out turning onto the road my house is on. I couldn't fix it till I got back as they don't know what bmws are up there and had no parts/dealers lucky it started to work till i got back home lol
