Yes you can. Or even an aftermarket obdII scanner.

          They do have a value, it's 0.

It's 0 because you've never achieved closed loop.

You've never gotten to closed loop because your O2 voltages are pegged.

You're spending too much time looking for unrelated issues (smoke test, cam sensor) that have nothing to do with your problem.

You need to fix the o2 sensor voltage problem that the DME is seeing...

How did you rebuild the engine if you only took the cylinder head off? :clueless:

Here's what those values are for:

brichter, thanks for pointing that out to me.. i rebuilt the cylinder head, replaced the head gasket, along with oxygen sensors, spark plugs, i will re-focus my efforts to closing the loop in the oxygen sensor, i know i have to break out the multi-meter and start testing their values and chasing the lines, the oxygen sensor has four pins... do know what the combination pin is and what values am suppose to get for testing ?

One pair will be 12v, that's the heater circuit. These are usually white on the sensor side. The other pair will be the sensor signal pair. These are usually gray and black on the sensor side. Both these are from my memory of a car I haven't owned in 15 years, and could be different depending on if the sensor is OEM or not, so don't trust my dusty old memory!

You need a wiring diagram for the DME system. I don't have the wiring diagram any more, I sold my Bentley manual when I sold my E36. You should buy a manual or at least see if you can find one online, the wiring is different for every DME system and if you don't have the right info, you're just wasting your time.

not sure if this is helpful, but here's the wiring colors for the O2 sensor plug:

                #1 Brown = Heater ground

                #2 Black = Signal ground

                #3 Red/White = positive +

                #4 Yellow = Sensor signal

Have you check you o2 sensor outputs yet?

ETM tells me it's for OBDII m/s52, up to 1998. 1999 seems to be slightly different.

my oxygen sensor has four wires.

                            black

                            red

                            yellow

                            white

i used my multi-meter to test it and it seems fines. Am not sure if i have the wires right. but from my search am suppose to be testing the black and red for the signal.

i get a wiring diagram tomorrow, is it possible for me to test the wiring harness to the dme?

am i suppose to be checking the volts or ohms across the red and the black ?

what should the result reading be ?

Have your meter set on DC voltage, range 0-5v. Black test lead to blk wire and red test lead to yellow wire according to the info provided in the previous post. I don't have the wiring diagram but it looks correct.

Once the car is warm up have someone hold the idle at 3k rpm and the voltage should sweep from 0 to 1 volt smoothly.

i just finished checking the O2 sensors with the computer, the lambda-sensor voltage 1 and 2 both rests at 4.75 during drive and WOT it moves to 1.1-1.6 for a couple of seconds and goes back to 4.75, the "monitor sensor 1 and 2 after cat" is consistently at 4.71...it wouldn't change until i hit about 100 mph whiles monitoring live data, then it moved to 3.12 and then back to 4.71.... for a very short second. i tried using the multi-meter but couldn't get any readings perhaps wasn't hot enough ? it takes my car about 5 to 6 cranks to start the engine when engine is cold and when it starts the idling is very rough after a short drive check engine lights up with the same four codes

202 fuel trim limit Bank 1

203 fuel trim limit Bank 2

                                227 fuel trim, Bank 1

                                228 fuel trim, Bank 2

should the oxygen sensor be affecting my start characteristics ?
